Description
As far as the Assembly’s creation myth goes, the Founders initially left their home planet in the expedition to the center of reachable cosmos in ordered to find the so called "Heart of the Universe" – the source of immense power prophesized by some of their oldest legends. But as they finished their voyage and reached the core, passing by the countless graves of those who came before, they didn’t find any Heart there – only silent and desolate void instead. So they descended upon a random planet in the center and declared that this, from now on, will be the Heart of the Universe. The established colony had been named Creacon – and over time, it had become a cradle of the magnificent empire, which spread over stars and reshaped the very cosmos for eons to come, marking the beginning of Assembly as we know it!
But peculiarly enough, sometime after the founding of the Creacon, the universe had also gained an actual, far more literal heart. Many of them, if fact!
Lo and behold the Stellar Engines – one of the most, if not the most magnificent of the Founders’ creations, colloquially known as the "starhearts".
When conceiving the Assembly, its longevity and persistence was the Founder’s top priority. On their journey, they had witnessed ruins of hundreds, if not thousands of civilization that perished before even managing to reach the space – and more than anything they wanted for their domain to not suffer the same fate. They did everything in their power to make Assembly as hard to destroy as possible, to the point where cities could literally grow back after being levelled, and people could be born from a single drop of blood. But eventually, the problem had arisen – the stars, cardinal sources of life, were themselves limited in terms of their lifespan. And without them, the Assembly couldn’t endure.
The easy solution was to simply migrate to the newly formed stars as the old ones dwindle.
For the Founders did not seek the easy ways!
Instead, they built these behemoths!
Each of these gargantuan megastructures is thousands of miles across, and their function is to nourish the stars of the cosmos. Powered by the background radiation – the most pristine, raw energy of the universe – they produce powerful gravitational vortexes that capture cosmic dust and launch it forward in the powerful jets. Meanwhile, the smaller machines are constantly built inside them and sent downstream – eventually settling down and creating their own smaller vortexes to stabilize and further propel the jet. As a result, massive branching currents form across the space, automatically targeting and supplying stars with potentially habitable globes. The portal webs and later bio-tech cities then grow along these cosmic arteries – meaning that Stellar Engines, in essence, lie at the cornerstone of the Assembly’s propagation!
The starhearts mostly reside of the border of the Inner and Outer circles of Assembly, while their vessels reach its farthest corners, touching the outside void of the Relic Fields. During the clear nights, you can even see them shimmering between the stars…
Originally, only a few dozens of these devices were constructed. But as the Assembly grew in size, their number was expanded to many thousands – luckily, like, many of the Founders’ creations, they came with inbuilt ability to build duplicates of themselves.
Due to their sacred status, Stellar Engines are considered a communal property of the entire creation, with no empires or factions daring to claim or appropriate them as their own. The people who oversee them are kept in extremely high regard, and can be chosen from any nation.
The destruction of Stellar Engines is considered the cardinal sin, and in the entire 4-billion-years-long (more or less) history of Assembly, the only entity known to commit it was the Worm.
