Description I bet most of you guys don't even know the history behind of the American Anthem song "The Star Spangled Banner." Well today I'm going to tell you.

During the war of 1812, Fort McHenry was under attack from British ships. Francis Scott Key, the creator of the poem "Defense of Fort McHenry" who witness the battle wrote the poem after seeing the Star-Spangled Flag still standing after being bombarded by the ships. Francis was held prisoner inside a British ship, and he felt helpless as he watch Fort McHenry getting Bombarded. I'm not sure if this is entirely accurate but I believe he thought that the fort wasn't going to last through out the night. Once morning hit and he saw the Star-Spangled Flag still flying in the air, he was inspired to write the poem.

I'm not sure about you guys, but I believe that God protected the fort from being destroyed. And that if proof to me that America is a great country.

O say can you see by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming,
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there;
O say does that star-spangled banner yet wave,
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

The history of that song is quite literally on my license plate. That war, quite literally happened in my back yard. I've always preferred the song, This land, by Woody Guthrie though.

Imagine either song(along with God Bless America) being the anthem and the flap over God being mentioned in them.

Why, no. And I find it unbelievable that god would pick a side between two human nations.

Just watch it and you can see how God actually played a role in America and how He guided people. After all He protected George Washington during the French-Indian War.

The idea that god interferes with human affairs contradicts most of modern christian dogma. If he loves us all equally, as the bible teaches, then he cannot take sides.

But in the Bible it also says that God will protect His People. The Bible also says that God works in His own way.

"His" people, according to the bible, are either the jews, or all people on earth. There was no mention of the US of A being his chosen country.

I'm not sure how the flag itself is considered a "True Patriot for America". I only say so because the flag itself is merely an inanimate symbol. Patriots are people, not just their symbols.

May I ask if there is any manner of anecdotal evidence or quotes from contemporaries in 1812 to make you think the Ineffable protected the fort? Just curious. Not trying to be hostile, but to be honest, most any nation fighting a war seems to credit God with it's victories. Just as the Germans wore belt buckles stating "Gott Mit Uns" (God With Us), or the statement of "God Save the King/Queen", no one nation really has the favor of the Creator. Just my opinion, mind you...

Today if that Flag could speak it'll probably hate the way things are going. Also the Star-Spangled Flag is more patriotic than most people today.

The-Necromancer In reply to Balddog4 [2013-05-17 01:48:58 +0000 UTC]

Oh, I'm rather certain that that flag would have much to say. Of course, the very nature of how people relate and see one another has changed vastly since it's time. I wouldn't say it's more "patriotic" than most. Patriotism, like many things, has changed. What you identify as Patriotism is only one definition, perhaps the "classical" definition. The one of McCarthy or Eisenhower, or perhaps of men like Teddy Roosevelt or Woodrow Wilson. Who knows? But the only real requirement of being a patriotic citizen is to love one's country and it's people. There is no correct way of doing that, so long as one does. Even I do love my nation and want what is best for it. Thus, I am fairly patriotic in my hopes for the future.

Many people love this country, many are patriotic. As stated, the real difference is that there is a greater diversity of where people think this nation should go and what is best for their countrymen. Their dedication and pride for America is no less genuine.

No you didn't. I asked, what if God has nothing to do with it, and they won the battle by chance. I'm not asking what would happen if they lost. I'm asking you to consider the idea that maybe God had nothing to do with the battle whatsoever. There is literally no reason to insert divine intervention into that battle.

As many many waring parties of a non Christian belief system... some maybe even without faith of any sort, have persevered while praying to a "false" god/s. In some situations a Christian force has prayed for victory and received defeat in the face of a non Christian force. One could say that God acts in mysterious ways. One and many could also say that God like the alignment of planets does not or can not involve it self in such human concerns. Just like the woman I encountered felt that God discouraged her from buying her self a chocolate cupcake but really she used her better judgment and God had better things to do than concern it self with an old woman's potential gluttony. Or if you're like me there is no god and my choices are my own and happenings that involve me are not dictated by a deity.

This is my opinion, I don't expect it to be yours. I would however suggest that the author not hold out any hopes of divine intervention in regards to things they're counting on turning out favorably. As if God works in mysterious ways he may mysteriously decide you shouldn't get into the college of your choice or you shouldn't get the job your qualified for or you should crash into a tree by the side of the road totaling your car through no fault of your own. God if there is one has mysteriously been punishing humans of all belief systems for thousands of years. I can't imagine why Christian Americans would be the exception?

and here's a quote for when the slime-balls attack you...

'In the beginning of a change the patriot is a scarce man, and brave, and hated and scorned. When his cause succeeds, the timid join him, for then it costs nothing to be a patriot.'

I've pretty much been distracted by your strong beliefs for hours now (you and a few other rather strong believers in a certain thing). And while I normally feel like debating a comment you or some other commenter has made this seems to require something different.

I find your patriotism unnerving and in a way threatening. I've felt for some time that it was poor judgment wear my beliefs like a badge of pride. Some times I fail and I assume I come off obnoxious as you are in many of your entries and posts. But even in my failings I know that my opinions and beliefs need to be tempered somewhat and used tactfully as not all believe as I do. I say this now as you seem to be young still and maybe your ears are open, but I don't know. Temper your patriotism, hold close your faith and allow your political beliefs to come forward only when appropriate. To wear these facets of your self at all times is to distance your self from others especially when you close your self off to how others feel and believe. The patriotism of you is just as off putting as the patriotism of another from another country. The praise of ones religion whether yours or another's comes across as threatening as it suggest that someone will attempt to convert or oppress your beliefs. Statement of political beliefs outside debate or rally is threatening in a similar fashion.

It's difficult to measure and temper one's own traits when they're so ingrained in our being. But an effort to do so is admirable at least.
