Description Well I spent about 3 hours on the Narnia movie website this morning watching and rewatching all their clips on the making of The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe and just tinkering about on the site. I am truly excited about the film and it just made me really hungry to draw Aslan. I adore the broody/moody colors used on the website and in a lot of posters/concept images for the film so I was definetly inspired by what I saw and thus my chosen colors.

The idea is Aslan simply guarding Narnia and even in frigid frozen tundraw under the White Witch's rule he will bring light and life in his passing. This is also dedicated to all the people I know that have been facing some very difficult life situations. Even in the darkest hour there is hope.

All right I shall stop being sappy now.

Technical details...really it is a quick unplanned speed painting. I should have probably taken more time to develop the concept and work on perspective and design etc but honestly I just wanted to paint. I didn't want to take anything serious or make it perfect and flawless (and flaws abound there are!). I just needed to paint..thats all.

Tools: ps 7 simple brushes
Time: err really don't know..I multitasked so probably 3-5 hours
Size: 3100x4500 pixels (started smaller though as I didnt expect it to go anywhere)
Prints: yes, larger prints available through me if there is interest.
Critique: serious ideas are welcome but since this is a quick piece I am unlikely to work on it again. However I welcome suggestions for future pieces.

just don't give up. I find I paint best when I listen to some music that truly inspires me. The biggest thing is practice practice practice...you will get there before you know it..just dont let yourself get too discouraged along the way. Don't give up...trust me even now I still have my moments when nothing comes out even close to right .

I don't know why, but I liked the concept art better than the actual movie... maybe it was the painter-ly feel. Nice job imitating the style here

Oh isn't that truly a great artist, when she can express her feelings in such a wonderful picture and besides make it fast? I'm SO impressed by this work. I'm impressed by the whole gallery of yours, but this work is something I just couldn't not to comment on. I haven't much time but still.
Every brush touch is amazing and makes a marvelous view. The colours are truly interesting and pretty, looks a bit like a mysterious dream.
I LOVE the moon light, the lion that stands in such a creative pose. The castle on the background is so beautiful that I nearly wanna go through my screen and visit this magical world you create with your talent.
My big dream is to learn how to draw in such style in Photoshop with simple brushes. I had an ideas for a long time but I just don't know how to start. I tried a different techniques but this one is especially artistic and hard... Eh I saw your picture and it made me remember how beautiful we can draw with Photoshop.
I don't know if I have a right to ask you but could you give me one advise - how to start and keep the process of work? I would be grateful with all my heart...
Ahem. And sorry I wrote such a useless comment.
Anyway, again, I'm in love with this piece, it's very artistic and expressive!!!

Oh! Have you seen the movie yet?! It's absolutely Amazing, I couldn't wipe the smile off my face for hours afterward, I was so terrified they'd not do the book justice, it's always been my favorite. Aslan gets hardly any fanart, this certainly makes up for it though

*wistful, longing sigh* I can't wait for the movie either...I first saw the animated one when I was very young, then the series made in the 80's, and of course, read all the books over and over and over again since childhood...But I'm not gonna get my hopes too high tho, because it IS Disney-made, and they mutilate every story they touch, but at least I can see some wonderful effects, and OMG, GRYPHONS!!!

balaa In reply to swandog [2005-12-11 04:16:26 +0000 UTC]

from what I hear this film is astoundingly done, it is disney's attempt to dig themselves out of the hole they dug. Yes I agree with you, I have been thoroughly dissapointed with Disney in recent years. I once wanted to work for them but since the years after the Lion King was made, I have seen the company continue to plummet. I look forward to thi film and I am hoping to agree with the high praises issued by my friends.

*nods to all that* I don't expect the Narnia movies to be as good as the books (movies never are), but I hope they'll at least keep the spirit of the books intact and not radically change anything like Disney tends to do. I don't mind that they added the pheonix and gryphons, even tho the book never mentioned them, because as a child, I had always wished those creatures HAD been included in the book. I wonder if they show the White Stag at the end? Well anyways, I'll have to wait until after Christmas to see it, sadly, because it doesn't play here in Norway until then. (And if they dub it, I will KILL someone!)

balaa In reply to swandog [2005-12-12 02:29:31 +0000 UTC]

yuh t'would stink if they dubbed it x.x..dubbed movies never have the same life to them as the original language they were made in. As far as disney goes, yeah they do tend to butcher stories. I still can't watch Pocahontas x.x..just thinking she was 12 years old makes it seem so wrong. Though to give credit the film had beautiful artistry...still..the story is hard to watch. I don't know when I will get to see Narnia but like you I hope it stays true to the book..or at least keeps the spirit alive. So far everyone who has read the book, that I know, has been satisfied. OH and if when the movie comes out on dvd and ya need an english copy, feel free to ask..I can always buy it here and send it to you .(I don't know if you can get your hands on english dvds in Norway)

I've heard both good and bad reviews by die-hard Narnia fans, so I'm not sure what to expect, but I'm hoping it'll be as good as I've longed for it to be. Narnia is a very, very special series of books for me; they helped shaped me into the person I am today and influenced the things I love most. I even share the same maiden name with the real Lucy (Barfield), C.S. Lewis' goddaughter, whom the book was dedicated to, so I always felt very connected to her in personality and possibly even by family-ties "way back when". And we found out that the preview plays one day before Christmas (and will be undubbed, but subtitled), so we hope to catch that showing. As for the DVD, it should be available here in English as well as the main Scandinavian languages; they usally are. *snugs*

(Your painting leads me to believe you've at least read "The Last Battle") He turns up in every one of them, as a beacon of hope, and you have portrayed his character wonderfully. Great job!
