Description Well I spent about 3 hours on the Narnia movie website this morning watching and rewatching all their clips on the making of The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe and just tinkering about on the site. I am truly excited about the film and it just made me really hungry to draw Aslan. I adore the broody/moody colors used on the website and in a lot of posters/concept images for the film so I was definetly inspired by what I saw and thus my chosen colors.

The idea is Aslan simply guarding Narnia and even in frigid frozen tundraw under the White Witch's rule he will bring light and life in his passing. This is also dedicated to all the people I know that have been facing some very difficult life situations. Even in the darkest hour there is hope.

All right I shall stop being sappy now.

Technical details...really it is a quick unplanned speed painting. I should have probably taken more time to develop the concept and work on perspective and design etc but honestly I just wanted to paint. I didn't want to take anything serious or make it perfect and flawless (and flaws abound there are!). I just needed to paint..thats all.

Tools: ps 7 simple brushes
Time: err really don't know..I multitasked so probably 3-5 hours
Size: 3100x4500 pixels (started smaller though as I didnt expect it to go anywhere)
Prints: yes, larger prints available through me if there is interest.
Critique: serious ideas are welcome but since this is a quick piece I am unlikely to work on it again. However I welcome suggestions for future pieces.

Luckily this came up in a friends random favs...really nice. I remember Narnia from when I was a little girl, eons ago. Aslan was so very strong and brave, he won my childish heart! Because I still try to keep my childish heart(though in these times it is harder and harder to keep it safe) your painting of this old friend can be counted on to protect.

I'm so glad people drew inspiration from the movie, it's now one of my favorites and something really well done, like this, is all the better for it. I especially like how the ice castle in the back is done, it looks really imposing, but beautiful at the same time. And I love how there is grass under Aslan, not only does it add some much needed green to the piece, but it also give a nice aura around him. One of your best, in my opinion.

Question: do you use the airbrush-type brushes more, or harder ones with varying opacity?

I can't get over your painterly effect.

balaa In reply to ox-of-ice [2005-12-29 04:25:25 +0000 UTC]

on this one I think I just went with harder brushes with varying opacity..I didnt expect it to go anywhere just kinda felt like painting. I never have played much with the airbrush setting...hmm I should.

I like it, but then, I'm a C.S. Lewis nut, and this actually harkens back all the way to the cartoon movie. It looks alot like the movie did...the old one, not this one.

btw since i see youre into narnia i gotta ask you something.
Aslan is the name of the lion right? but why aslan? 0_o it means lion in turkish, my language. and I read the books all reading aslan for both "aslan" and "lion" words and never noticed his name was aslan until i saw the movie things on mtv. I was like "do they know turkish?" "is this a turkish movie" "is the director turkish?" "script editor?" 0_o

balaa In reply to pinkelf232 [2005-12-27 02:46:38 +0000 UTC]

Well the writer studied mythology I am certain and probably came across the word for lion in turkish and liked the sound of it. I really can't say for sure where the name hailed from but I never knew it was Turkish for Lion ^__^

M-of-Transformation In reply to pinkelf232 [2005-12-27 01:25:41 +0000 UTC]

Ah, something you might wish to note is that the movie was made based almost directly off of the Chronicles of Narnia book series by C.S. Lewis. Therefore, the naming was done by a Cambridge professor roughly 100 years ago.

You might wish to investigate/read the series if you've seen the movie (which, thought not as much as other movies, changed some things that were in the book to make it more action-intensive). Heck, if you can, try and hunt down the old cartoon movie of LWW. Those were both done before the movie (obviously), and get the point/symbology down better than the new movie.
