Another color adventure!

This one should have been finished a week or so ago... But better late then never. River water, canyons and goober trees. Those aren't very happy trees, but I'm working on that.

Braeburn talks too much, Maud too little, and Strong Heart is stuck in the boat with them. Worst geological expedition ever.

Caught between a rock and a hard place, isn't he? At least Braeburn's rowing.

Very nice painting, too!

That looks so beautiful. The trees looks splendid, I can't explain why but their style really suits the scene and mood. The water is amazing looking, the way it ripples and reflects some of it's surrounding is just amazing! It looks complex to do. I love the rock formations on the canyon, rocks have always been difficult in my book so I tend to keep away from them, but your's look wonderful.
Strong, Brae Burn and Maud Look fantastic in that boat. They expressions and poses were done to perfection. The shading on them looks incredible too. I need to work on mine.

I was told not to say just good things about drawing so I can help people improve so I'll say at least this. The grey rock side underneath the tanned rocks could use a little more detail. The err... there's nothing else that I would improve upon, the end.

Sincerely,
        Soulyman

Thank you for the detailed comment!
The grey rock layer really could use some more detail, I'll catch that next time.

Keep at rocks, they get easier the more you paint them. For rocks it's generally best to start with a cube or rough shape and then add in details... That Jack Hamm book I was talking about before is probably the best on rocks that I have seen really. But I'm still working on rocks myself.

Bakuel In reply to MoppyPuppy [2014-03-31 04:45:49 +0000 UTC]

And bestiality is a vice based strictly on human tradition and morals. Incest, even if it's theoretical in this instance, at least has some actual scientific reasoning on why it's generally a bad idea.
Bestiality in this Equestrian example (Braeburn x Strong Heart) would be just two intelligent consent giving individuals of different species wanting to get freaky with each other. As opposed to bestiality in the real world, where the non-human animal cannot give consent.

Bakuel In reply to MoppyPuppy [2014-03-31 05:23:39 +0000 UTC]

I do, but not passionately. I'm more of guy who looks at multiple possible ships and thinks, "Well that one could work," or "That one's so odd that it'll be either a awesome story or a trainwreck.". I don't really have a one true ship with characters, I'm just after good stories. So I could read a story about "Strong Heart x Braeburn", "Braeburn x Maud", "Maud x Strong Heart" or "Braeburn x Maud x Strong Heart" and I would judge the story on how entertaining the author manages to make it. They are all possibilities, we don't really know enough about these characters since they aren't the main characters of the show.

For fun and because I've procrastinating, here are my arguements for all four pairings.
Braeburn and Strong Heart seem to have already started a friendship by the end of their episode. A writer can just play with that and make it blossom into something romantic. This is the easiest.

Any relationship with Maud would probably be other person coming to understand her. As she stated, "She doesn't show her enthusiasm like Pinkie Pie". This leaves open the possibility that she actually does feel a lot of emotions, she just doesn't show them like other ponies. She could have enjoyed, say the apple cider or being the library, she just didn't express her emotions in ways any of the mane six besides Pinkie Pie could pick up. Maud could click with Strong Heart or Braeburn. The story with either Strong Heart or Braeburn would be one of coming to an understanding an going from there.

As for the all together pairing. They are all on a boat, they probably have cider.

If Maud is smiling, it is a great sign she enjoys the view while Braeburn enjoy someone else presence. Strong Heart must have learned patience from young age. At least she know how to kick his flank in case he tryto adventure too
far. And Maud still enjoy the view. Must be heaven for her.

Wonderful work

The line "life is but a dream"... I forgot how weird it was for a children's song.
Rereading it sent me into a mild existentialist crisis. I got better though.
But now that song is stuck in my head...

I know, right? I only knew the "Row, row, row your boat, / Gently down the stream." part, so when I read the complete song, that surprised me too! I wonder what the meaning is supposed to be... maybe it's just lazy rhyming!
Sorry about pestering you with the song; I just couldn't resist mentioning it!

Goshdangit, I didn't even praise you for that beautiful picture of yours. The colors are the best part, in my humble little opinion. Maybe the landscape is a little bare, but then again, it adds to the feeling of contemplation. Quite Bob Rossesque, if I may say so!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Bakuel In reply to Krazylec [2014-03-30 04:56:58 +0000 UTC]

I do watch Bob Ross videos!  That's why I'm always complaining about how I can't get my trees to every be happy.

Some would point out that the old master painters of the Romantic era were better at landscapes. And I would agree. But for half hour landscape painting, Bob Ross is best I say. While often parodied, Bob Ross's videos are actually filled with useful information about landscape painting in general. Especially about general landscaping aesthetics, or how to make a bunch of rocks and trees actually look interesting, or at least, get someone to look at it. Which is hard. People these days still view rocks as something boring...

To be honest, I don't really know much about landscape painting. Before I started drawing ponies around 3 years ago, in fact, I didn't do backgrounds at all. I'm more of a character-design guy. Even when doing scenes with backgrounds I favor personal viewpoints rather then the grand and sweeping point of view of landscape paintings. For instance, I prefer the viewpoint of a human looking down at a four foot tall pony painting a rose, or the view point of a frog, or a wild cat jumping at Daring Do. This picture is a pretty big departure for me.

The picture used to be even more sparse... The original sketch didn't have any green things at all. It was just bleak mediocre canyon sides... Next time I do a landscape I'll try to make it more lively. With more interesting rocks and plenty of (hopefully happy) trees. And some bushes. Looking back this one could have really used some more varied plant life.

Krazylec In reply to Bakuel [2014-03-30 21:08:13 +0000 UTC]

Is Bob Ross that often parodied? The way I perceive it, he's more like this demigod of landscape painting, zen attitude, and general soft-speaking. I know close to jack about painting, so I can't really have an opinion as far as his merits as a painter go (except a “Wow, it looks pretty sweet!”), but as a person, he did quite a strong impression on me.

And I say things are only boring when you make them boring! A simple pebble can be an oddly fulfilling sight, while a very well-made portrait can evoke nothing more than a “Yeah, that's pretty.” I like your drawings and you put yourself into them; every one of them has its own message that gets across, both from the picture itself and from you as an artist. It's great that you're trying new things; even if you aren't fond of them, and won't do much with them in the end, it's always a good experience! (Oh, and I noticed every example you mentioned is one of your previous illustrations; do I get bonus points?)

I don't know about these trees... hey do look lively, but more... skittish, than happy. Maybe they're not used to seeing ponies!

Bakuel In reply to Krazylec [2014-03-31 04:10:10 +0000 UTC]

His artistic abilities aren't parodied, but the show is. They aren't mean spirited parodies, but more light jabs. I looked it up and it says he even took part in some of them himself.
On artistic ability, I think people's opinions about his artistic abilities probably have more to do with their personal scale of snobbery, if you know what I mean. Bob Ross isn't like the old traditional landscaper master painters. Ross's speed paintings take 30 minutes rather then weeks, months or years. What they wanted from their own personal art isn't really comparable.

My personal opinion is that I don't think he was some modern day master landscape painter, many of his landscapes, while good looking, don't really tell a story, or trigger a strong or nuanced emotion. They are generally *just* good looking. unlike the old Romantic painters, who could tell stories with a landscape. But Bob Ross was decent and much, much better then me. And his show is filled with useful tips for hobbyist and guys still getting the hang of things. Like me.

Great, after reading that my head will become so swollen I won't be able to get anything done at all. You do get 50 points for noticing the examples! I will be doing more landscapes, it's a useful thing to know how to do. Like as a wide angle view to establish the setting of a story.

Skittish trees, thanks, I really needed a laugh. I'll have to remember that one. No wonder everyone mistakes Fluttershy for a tree. Hopefully the trees will improve.

Krazylec In reply to Bakuel [2014-03-31 13:04:21 +0000 UTC]

Oh, ok, I see! I admit I had a hard time seeing how someone as sweet and cheerful-looking as Bob Ross could be nastily made fun of. Funny that he contributed to some of them!

Yeah, of course you can't compare Bob Ross's art to that of great landscape artists. Still, even though he definitely doesn't hold a candle to German Romantics, for example, I find what he does to be valuable. To me, his pictures don't tell a story as much as they express a feeling, and even though they don't make as strong an impression as those of other, more legendary artists, they still have me pause for at least a few seconds to appreciate the impression of the landscape he has just drawn. Plus, as you mentioned, he was, simply put, a very nice guy, and even though he certainly had his faults, he was able to give precious little lessons regarding the attitude you should have toward life in general.

It's good to have your head swell every now and then! You've got to be proud of what you do, so that you can carry on with your head held high and a merry heart! So yeah, keep being as good as you can, and I'll keep feasting my eyes on your art and blabbering about stuff.

Glad that bit made you smile, but hey, there's nothing wrong with skittish trees! Maybe next time, we'll see sad trees, majestic trees, or the iconic happy little trees from you!
