Derpy's talent was never been specified in the cartoon; my idea for Derpy's talent: chemistry!

Derpy is the perfect representation of one of the most predominate aspects of science that tends to be overlooked: luck!

Derpy has always seem like the curious type which tends to lead her into some trouble. Sure she's a bit clumsy and reckless, but some amazing scientific discoveries and inventions were made on accident!

In Equestria, no one takes her seriously as a scientist due to her accident prone mannerisms and lazy eye. Luckily, she was able to befriend Dr. Whooves who sees her as the brilliant pony she is! c:

Dery's scientific practice is that of a trial and error. She likes the hands(hooves) on approach. She is perhaps one of the bravest characters in the show due to the unique characteristic of having the complete absence of the fear of failure!
