I recently finished binge-reading Captivity on Fanficton and I was completely blown away with development of characters and the whole plot progression!
The other day, I couldn't believe my luck when I came across this artwork on Pinterest and found the link to your DA page!^.^ Your art is so beautiful and its super cool seeing your mers for real! Honestly, they look very close to what I had imagined them to look! Also, baby Danny-mer is suuuper adorable! ^^Β

Baby mers are also only about 12 to 18 inches long.Β So in that sense Danny is really just very smol.

Oh, boy, I can't WAIT to see flashbacks of Danny and Clockwork in Captivity! I love the whole mentor relationship they had in the series, and this sounds just so promising! Question - are they still in the Carribean by Danny's shoal, and if so, does Β Danny's shoal like know about Clockwork, or perhaps like spread rumors of him, being so old and unnatural and all?
I know they can't exactly speak like we do, so... And if Clockwork is so old, does know of or remember the time when Mers were more, uhm, communicative? I remember reading a segment where you mentioned they had writing and a more 'civilized' society.

Yes, Clockwork in the story is old enough to remember his species when it had a culture and a writing system. He is also one of the only mers that still remembers how to read and write it. As far as speaking goes, that part hasnt really changed for the species as a whole.
Part of the reason he lives so isolated from the shoals is due to his behavior and not just his faded colors. He tends to watch the world and observe things differently than others. He's also meticulous and knows how to use tools. Much of his behavior is foreign and deemed unnatural by the others who alienate him out of fear.

Adrift is definetly going to delve a bit into the past given Danny's complex relationship with his shoal.

Captivity is a story that spans over three Arc, Captivity, Adrift, and Unity. These are not sequels or books in a series, but a continuation of the story. Like how some tv shows have seasons.

Now that's such a good design for mer!Clockwork. I love the scarring too. I wonder just what he went through. You can definitely tell that he's had a lot of experience in the world for sure.

Clockwork is listed as a phantom/sickly mer in this story. Though his illness/faded colorsΒ is due to his age more than anything else. As for the scars, a male his age has likely been in a number of scraps over the years. His scars are proof that he's survived as long as he has.

Is there a particular fish that Clockwork is based off of? Also will we get a full color version of Clockwork some day?

Sorry for the late reply. As for what kind of fish Clockwork is based off of, it's loosely based on a Coelcanth (The living fossil) fish. I will say loosely since the mers in Captivity AU are their own breed of fish and don't have tails of 'other species' so to speak. So you're not going to see a dolphin mer or a clownfish one.
As for his coloring, I wasn't too off when I said there wasn't much color to toss around. He's mostly a gray/blue with white mottling around his damaged fins and scales. He's one of the few who's finer scales don't have a skintone color.

Baby mers are very small compared to the adults, especially at his age, which is only about 4 months mind you. Its so they can escape into the nooks and crannies of the reef to avoid predators.

I have to disagree with you on the color scheme. I found clockwork's colors to be perfect. Like and albino sea creature. It reminds me of a wise whale in a story called "Whale Song." We was the largest and oldest whale in a group of humpbacks, and was albino. Seeing this reminded me of that story. I'll say it again. The color scheme is awesome. Nicely done.

He's actually very similar to that. His scales are a sort of faded blue/grey. I honestly just didn't add any color to this pic when I shaded it. It just felt more comic bookish in grayscale.

Adrift is the name of Arc II of Captivity. Captivity itself is going to be made up of three primary arcs. The first arc is almost complete and I'll soon be moving onto the second one.

the first one is in the aquarium or research area (whatever it's called) from what i can see so i assume the second arc (whatever an arc is) from what i read is not and Juno the baby, will he be in one of these arcs?

An arc is essentially a storyline/plot with a beginning and end, but is not the end of the entire story itself. Essentially it's like a tv season in written form. The story involving the aquarium is coming to an end, but the entire story of captivity isn't over, not by a long shot.
As for Juno, yes, he actually becomes a major character in the third arc.
