Description This image is from a shoot this last weekend, with the talented Jennifer, whose modeling portfolios can be found at: [link] and at [link]

It is rare that I find adults who can fit into my period clothing--but Jenn fit quite comfortably into this Victorian blouse and skirt. Her long torso, squared shoulders and graceful, swan-like neck were perfect for the late Victorian era scene I had envisioned, but it was her intelligence that really made her shine. She seemed to be able to read my mind, so that even my "test" shots--where I was just metering the lights--were works of art!

I love that she's a little older than my usual models...and the way the few extra years add a softness to her look. I wanted to emphasize that softness and gentleness, using this shoot to show her as a young Victorian matriarch, posing for a formal portrait in her parlor...and this particular image is special, because to me, it epitomizes motherhood.

In fact, when I look at it, I see Wendy Darling's mother, caught up in a private daydream (because where did Wendy get her maternal instincts and her imagination, if not from her mother?!)...

I am working on a "fine art" version of it--one of my painterly treatments...but for now, I thought I'd post this one, because, well, mothers are wonderful. I know mine is, anyway!

Thank you so much! I'm always somewhat amazed by the ideas that come to me, as I work on an image...it's like they have a life of their own, and it's only when I get really close to them, can I hear them whispering it to me...

The time and effort you put into these images really payes off. Every detail is perfect and there is such a beautifull "feel" to your work. All of this delivers a special image from a very gifted photographer. Exceptionally well done.

hahah...catching up only because i've not done anything else! lol....i've not done anything to get ready for christmas yet...i've got a homework assignment which is waiting for me to start and it's been so rediculously busy here at work that i've had to just spend time at DA to give my brain a rest! 1 more week and then the students break up for christmas, and i'll be very glad to have a bit of calm again!

Yeah...that's usually when *I* catch up on dA--when I'm avoiding more important work! Sad, isn't it?

I have SUCH a busy December planned (shoot-wise), that I'm starting to get a little anxious...and I've more or less had to give up the notion of ever being REALLY caught up for very long here--just not going to happen, if I keep up my shooting schedule. Ah well--at least I can check in from time to time, and keep up a bit, anyway...and hopefully everyone understands... (And are probably grateful, since that's one less response THEY have to make! )

You know...I haven't seen Upstairs, Downstairs since I was a kid! I'll have to look it up on Netflix! (I have been watching a bit of...oh, what is it--"The Duchess of Duke Street" on Netflix..and have certainly enjoyed the costumes and sets in that! Amazing what they did with relatively little! )

(And thank you! Mothers have a very, very special place in my heart. I think they're one of the best inventions, ever! )

Well...I actually think it's best in the first season or so--which is unusual, as it's often the other way 'round! It sometimes feels a bit dated...but Gemma Jones is marvelous, BBC productions are always beautiful, even when on a budget--and it (initially, at any rate) deals with interesting class issues. I'd say it's worth watching the first season, anyway!

Athansor In reply to horai [2007-12-05 01:56:55 +0000 UTC]

Thanks--she IS a wonderful model, with the perfect look for this shoot! It's not easy, picking models...because I have SO many who want to work with me...and in an ideal world, I'd have time enough to work with them all! Sadly--I don't have that amount of time...and most of them are, alas, far too much a product of this century to look right for my shoots--and if you put a modern-looking young woman in a costume--she'll just look like a modern woman in a costume. It takes a certain type of face and body to create this sort of image. :/

I'm very fortunate that Jenn wanted to work with me, though--as she really does have a timeless elegance to her--combined with a very wholesome feeling that makes her stand out.

Beautiful, as always. I'm especially fond of the wonderful lighting that gives that lovely golden glow to the hair and clothes - and the draping of the curtains in the back and all of those sumptuous fabrics are marvelous - all adding up to the great splendor of a classic. The model is of course a great bonus!

Athansor In reply to rad-ix [2007-12-05 01:30:33 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! I can't stress enough to fellow portrait photographers how useful it is to have a trunk full of lengths of fabric! A couple of yards of rich looking remnants will go a long way towards creating rich looks for a set. The tablecloth is a one yard remnant of upholstery fabric...the chair is covered with a couple of yards left over from creating a canopy over my bed...one of the curtains is the backside of a cheap Marshalls curtain, and the other is a heavy velvet curtain, clearanced at HalfPriceDrapes.com. (I have wooden dowels hanging from pulleys in my ceiling...and I drape fabrics over them, or silk flowers, or leaves, as needed, to add dimension to standard backdrops. I just lower them whenever I want to change them out! )

I DO love creating the illusion of another time and place!

Lovely image and you obviously went to a lot of trouble to set it up. It's beautiful and I am almost hesitant to make a suggestion. But here goes - I feel that you could have changed the hands into a "softer" pose. At the moment it looks like she is trying to break off her wrist. I am obviously exaggerating to make the point but I think you know what I am getting at.

Just my

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Athansor In reply to Zaleeu [2007-12-05 01:18:58 +0000 UTC]

Nah, no offense taken--especially because she wasn't even "posed" at that point--it was a test shot for lighting only--where I tell the models to do anything they like, because I'm only taking photos to check the lighting balance. I just wound up liking the image quite a lot--so I went with it. If you check out the proof gallery, here: [link] , you'll see many more images where her hands WERE actually posed--and thus, look much better. Hands are actually one of the things I'm fanatical about...but this was the only pose like this in the whole shoot...and I just couldn't resist it, regardless of the hands. (So good catch, on your part! )

Amazing job!

Athansor In reply to mmenathalie [2007-12-04 12:24:01 +0000 UTC]

Funny you should ask--because her hair was a NIGHTMARE to get right!!!!! She'd touched up the color the night before--and it was beautiful--but SUPER silky, and absolutely refusing to stay, no matter how I pinned it. (In fact, even the bobby pins slid right out of it!)

So in the end, it wound up being a joint effort. We sprayed a ton of Aqua Net (heavy duty hairspray) on it, while she hung her head upside down and let it dry...then I'd tease it, and pin it up in sections, and then she'd take whatever I'd pinned up, and spray it some more, and scrunch it up and sort of sculpt it upright, with the hairspray. It was quite funny!

So I'd say it was a joint effort--although usually it's just me, who does it!

And thanks!

The secret is tinfoil! I crumple tinfoil up as a "base", and roll hair around it, to make the big soft "poufs" of hair. Usually it's pretty easy--it was just hard this time, because her hair was so slippery! (If you were trying it with your own hair, of course, you could use actual "rats". as well--where you collect the hair from your hairbrush over time, and roll it into loose "puffs" of hair, then you just pin those in your hairstyle to make it look like you have more hair. Try it sometime--you'll be amazed at how versatile they can be for "period" hairstyles!
