Description Did a shoot with Maura this weekend, of her as Lia, from "Chevalier d'Eon". Maura, as usual, made the costume...and the "set" is my studio, heavily embellished to feel "Versaille-ish".

It is quasi-Valentinesque, which is the reason I'm posting it today--not because I think this is a particularly stellar piece! (I am, however, rather pleased with the slightly over the top colors in Lia...and the subdued tones in the rest of the image...feels kind of...I dunno, *cool*, for lack of a better word! )

Enjoy!

Unfortunately, she only sells sometimes, when she's getting rid of her old costumes...and she doesn't even do that, too often. She figures costuming wouldn't be as much fun, if she was doing it as more than a hobby.

Too bad--her work is gorgeous--as lovely in person, as it is in photos!

This looks more like a photo manipulation or a painting than a straight photo, something unreal about it. BUT I love it no matter what!

LOL!! Thank you! I am still rather amazed with how even the proofs from this session have a painterly look to them--although it definitely becomes much more pronounced when I work on retouching them... And since my photographic influences are primarily painters, not photographers--I'm never disappointed to hear that my work looks painterly, rather than photographic!

It's an amazing shot, it shows all the work and care you put into it - the costume is amazing (I can't believe she manages to do that king of stuff on her own) and your decoration puts it very well into focus. I agree with the others that said it has a painted feel, I think it's especially the colors, and the drapes and the ivy slightly out of focus in the background that create this illusion

Thank you so much! (And believe me--I can't believe she does that all on her own, either! She's already done one more dress from that same character...and has several more planned, I think. I don't know how she does it--but I'm SOOOO glad she lets me photograph her! )

(And I love that you picked up on the out-of-focus greenery and the drapes--as I was particularly pleased with how I did those. Don't know why...just remember being REALLY happy about them, at the time! )

No problem! Well the two of you definitely do great shots together, so all I can do is say congrats and hope there will be more of them, perhaps with her other dresses?

Ooo--look what I just unearthed!

You know...funny you should mention us doing more shoots together, with more of her dresses...because the last time she was in town (Christmas), we did a shoot with yet another costume she'd done from this anime--this time, Mme de Pompadour. It's VERY orange...and might not ever make dA...but you might enjoy some of the proofs, anyway! (They're not retouched, of course--and they ARE very orange! And did I mention their orangeness? You have been warned! ) [link]

I like these: [link] [link]

(Hehe...sorry you asked, now, aren't you?! )

Aah, of course not!! I'm a curious person, you know
Great shots, very orange indeed but it's a nice shade that doesn't hurt the eye, and it goes perfectly well with the brownish hues of your sets in the background! This one is one of my favourites too [link] along with [link] and [link]
Couldn't decide between the last two...

They're really great, thanks for sharing!

I understand--I'm nosey--er, I mean, curious--myself!

I really had a GREAT time building that set--because once I realized it was a Mme de Pompadour gown we were doing, I immediately remembered this famous painting...and set out to evoke this set:

[link]

Prior to that brainstorm, I was killing myself, trying to figure out what sort of set I could come up with that would go with orange--but once I had the Mme Pompadour piece of the puzzle, the ideas flowed madly. You can't really see if in most of the proofs, but I have a set of cement cherubs on a fountain in my livingroom--a big, garden-size fountain--and I even took them off the fountain, and set them up high, in the corner of her "room", to mimic the cherubs in the original. Great fun, that! I dearly love an artistic chaos, in the room--and almost all paintings of her show her in an artistic disarray of a boudoir.

(And you picked some of my other favorites, btw! )

helcarosse In reply to Athansor [2008-06-01 16:52:54 +0000 UTC]

Heh, imagination flow -- it's wonderful, isn't it??
You can madly try to come up with an idea for hours or days and nothing... but once you have that little nudge you need, in one second you've got it all sorted out! Weird are the paths of our brain : ))

By the way, that's why I like your sets, because they have an "organized chaos" that gives them their realism. You'll never see a room perfectly tidy in real life, and it's the little details that you see in a corner that make the charm of a photograph

Athansor In reply to helcarosse [2008-06-09 20:52:24 +0000 UTC]

Oh yeah--nothing like it! And I'm in the middle of a perfect example of "trying to come up with an idea"--and failing miserably. Bleah. Took a few couple of days off to paint some furniture that had been moved into a new room, and no longer matched...but discovered that I don't have any painting mojo right now. Not a whiff of it. Got the basecoat on--then started boldly in with my usual antiquing techniques--and immediately realized that if I didn't stop right away, I was just going to have to redo it anyway...so I did. Bummer. The furniture will just have to wait until inspiration strikes again...

And thanks! I get my inspiration from films...one of my favorite film techniques is when they start the movie by slowly panning through a room, examining little treasured objects that are scattered all around it... I *love* how it makes you feel a part of that environment, long before you see a person--you feel like you know something about the people who live there, because of how they live. I try to do that same thing with my more elaborate sets...and to at least suggest it, with my simpler ones. Nice to know that someone notices!

Absolutely brilliant and there is a definite painting in the shot.

Athansor In reply to horai [2007-03-31 01:18:05 +0000 UTC]

I think it took about 45 minutes to build the set...with Maura laughing at me the whole time, making comments like, "You are SO loving this!!!"

She stopped laughing, when she saw the proofs--and admitted it had been the right thing to do--not just another "Aurora" quirk.

We built the set before we got her in to costume. Good thing, too--because I originally laced her corset too tight--and she hadn't been in it 10 minutes before she was feeling a little queasy. I IMMEDIATELY ordered her out of the costume--she protested, but I pointed out that no one could do a shoot while they were feeling icky...and got her out of the dress, and started the time-consuming job of unlacing her corset again. Before I'd made it more than a few eyes down, she was feeling VERY queasy, and in the end, it was a mad race for the bathroom, with me running behind her, unlacing and tugging hoopskirts off as she ran. (She made it in time...but never again will I lace a corset "as tight as I can"--even when told to do so! After a suitable recovery period, we dressed her again...this time, with me carefully measuring the gap in the back of the corset--and making sure she had the numbers, to give to everyone ELSE who ever laces her in, so she doesn't find herself in that situation again!)

Definitely one of the more bizarre starts to a shoot, I've ever experienced!

horai In reply to Athansor [2007-03-31 08:47:04 +0000 UTC]

If that wasn't so awful for the poor girl it would definitely have been a Kodak comedy moment, you rushing behind with corset laces flailing.
The work most definitely shows. The photo reminds me of a painting but for the life of me I cannot remember the artist apart from the fact he was Spanish. It's a fantastic shot.

Athansor In reply to horai [2007-03-31 13:10:23 +0000 UTC]

It WAS pretty funny, in retrospect--in fact, since Maura is no longer local, she was actually staying with me, while she visited here--and it became quite the in-joke for the rest of the time she was here. It also turned out to be a good dry run for the corset--since she wore it to a convention, soon after--and wouldn't have been able to get herself out again so quickly, if she'd been laced in too tight. (And she won an award for the costume, at said convention, btw--something that thrilled us both, to no end!)

So far most people react to this image and it's painterly feel...but the only person whose come up with an artist is my boyfriend--who says it reminds him of Gainsborough. Personally, I've decided it's the combination of colors, and period that make it look so painterly...because when I tweaked the proofs from this shoot to match the final colors in this image--they all suddenly reminded me of paintings too--even without the careful retouching this one's had. Something about that shade of icey blue, in particular. (Can you tell I've put a lot of time into figuring out WHY this has such a painted feel?! )

But I'm doing FAR too much navel-gazing right now--so I'll stop that--and simply thank you again, for the charming comment!

horai In reply to Athansor [2007-03-31 16:48:32 +0000 UTC]

Excellent, she must have been really pleased with an award.
If I think of the painting I'll let you know but you're right, it's the colour and the period that is so painterly (love that word) .

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Athansor In reply to horai [2007-03-31 20:13:57 +0000 UTC]

She was. (I think there was some loose talk about her actually inflicting violence on the award presenters, if she DIDN'T win one, in fact...but fortunately, their good sense prevented that from happening. )

She just wrote me that she's going to tackle another gown from that particular character's wardrobe, so I assume that I'll get to do another, similar shoot with her at some point..

And yes, do let me know, fi you figure out who the painter is!
