Description I'm turning 40 in a couple of days, but everything about me but my knees feels as if I were still a kid.

This is a photo from an old shoot--a little too overexposed in places, to be a "keeper"--but too evocative of my love of dressing up, and old books, to be tossed. I'm uploading it in honor of my birthday...and as a tribute to all the little girls out there who love dressing up and would rather spend an afternoon curled up with a good book, than just about anything else in the world.

The model is Kaitlin, in a wonderful celery-green gown from the 20's. It has tiny fish hand embroidered on it, and at the dropped waist, the sash has a small bauble made up of golden crab claws, grasping a jade green sphere. It's one of my favorite vintage gowns...but sadly, only a wee snip of a VERY skinny 12 year old girl can fit into it! :/

This is such a wonderful example of the stunning and inspired work in your gallery. I LOVE natural daylight.

Also, fear not '40'. I turned 42 on three days ago, and feel great.

Thank you so much, for the kind words!

(And I've gotten used to 40 by now...I just turned 41 today! 41 is a very uninteresting age...but 42--well, that's the answer to life, the universe, and everything, isn't it?! )

Outstanding. I hate to disagree with you about it not being a keeper, you are ever so wrong. I guess as artists we pic on the tiniest of imperfections.
Gorgeous!

LOL--well, I agree with you completely that as artists we nitpick our stuff to death...and who am I to disagree with someone who likes one of my pieces?!

Thanks for the kind words!

Why thank you--what a lovely thing to want to do!

Yes--of course you may paint it...in fact, you, and any other artist is always welcome to paint anything I've photographed and am showing online, either here, or on my main website: [link] It's a lovely compliment to inspire another artist!

The only thing I'd ask is that you send me a link, if you decide to post it online--not only so I can enjoy it, but so I can send the link to the model in question, if I'm still in touch with them. Art is always better when it's shared!

Thanks again--and can't wait to see what you do with this!

JohndeLano [2007-08-06 20:23:52 +0000 UTC]

A wonderful photograph I appreciate it that you pointed out that she's wearing a vintage dress. I don't find the 'over exposed' areas disturbing. If you didn't mention it, I'd think that it had to look like this. You've captured something that almost can be called 'a moment in time'. Keep up the good work

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Athansor In reply to JohndeLano [2007-08-07 01:46:01 +0000 UTC]

Thank you so much, for the courtly and gracious critique! I never know how much my watchers are interested in the story behind my images...and the details--what is antique in the image, what is not...but those are the sorts of things I love to know, so I share them--and figure those who aren't interested won't bother reading it anyway. I feel vindicated, though, whenever anyone comments on it!

And thank you--I'm glad to hear the overexposure isn't distracting. Sometimes we can get so lost in artistic "rules" that we place too much emphasis on them, and lose the important thing--the storytelling. If the story is good enough--viewers will overlook quite a lot...and if the story isn't compelling--well, following the rules won't keep their interest for long! I appreciate the reminder!

Thank you! I'm a sucker for little girls with long hair, reading books...it's a big joke with my long-time models--that sooner or later, I'll pull out some antique books for them to pose with...

Well, thank you! I've been pleasantly surprised that others aren't as bothered by it as I am...but then, you KNOW we're always own worst critics!

Here's to all those little girls, everywhere...in their pjs, their jeans, their foofy dresses...no matter HOW old they are! (Because I'm STILL one of those little girls, at 40...hanging out in my jeans or sweats or a nighty (if I'm feeling old-fashioned ), buried in a book... What could be better?! )
