Thank you so much!!! This is such a *lovely* comment--I'm quite ashamed that I'd gotten so far behind in my responses, and am only now responding!

I'm happy to say that this young lady is as beautiful on the inside, as she is in this photo, too... She actually cut off all her hair (waist-length--and yes, it IS that fluffy naturally--it's quite amazing!) and donated it to Locks of Love. I would NEVER have done that, at her age!!! With that kind of tender heart--I'm looking foward to seeing what kind of adult she'll turn into!

I think she was 12, in that photo...and she gave away her hair when she was...13, I believe. She would be about 15 now, then! (I could be off by one year in my calculations--she might've been 13 in that picture, and 16 now--but that's close enough! )

Thank you! I'm a huge pre-Raph/Victorian classicist/JM Cameron fan myself...and I was bowled over by their influences in your own work--particularly Ms Cameron's...just was too busy last night to write out the fabulous comments your work deserved. (Besides--there were just too darn many I was crazy about, to comment on them all! )

I'm looking forward to seeing more of your own amazing work--it really stands out, here!

She is a little beauty--and yes, quite, quite "fey" looking. Her eyes are deep jade green, and absolutely fascinating--full of daydreams and mischief...

I think we're so bogged down with modern life and fashions that we have forgotten that young ones can still look so lovely and almost ethereal. It was of course a standard that the pre-Raphaelites and classicists aspired to. Waterhouse's image of femininity has fascinated me from about the age of 11 when looking through the library of books my father had at home (He taught Latin and the classics).

I think it's the air of innocence and the unworldlyness that is the crux and this young lady has that in more than adequate measures.
Both Jill and I both said Oh wow when I opened the piece.

Oh you are SOO right--I completely agree with you!!!! I am so saddened when I see kids her age running around with their travesty of overt adult sexuality, young girls wearing makeup, without any innocence left to show at all. I have an incredibly hard time finding models to work with who actually don't look too jaded--and that's just plain scary!

I'm obsessed with innocence and grace and small, fragile moments of beauty--and I think we need them more than ever, today--to remind us that not everything IS about deconstruction and cynicism...and yes, that really is something the pre-Raphs and classicists (so nice to speak to someone who recognizes the distinction! ) aspired to and built into their work. Waterhouse, in particular has a fascinating take on it, with his waif-like women with their hungry, devouring eyes. (Hylas and the Nymphs, in particular, is a perfect example of this--the powerful combination of intense eroticism with profound innnocence knocks me out, everytime I see it!)

Your dad taught Latin and the classics???? How VERY cool!!!!!!! I would've been like a kid in a candy store in his library! I had a single art book, when I growing up--something my mom had found at a second hand book store--I think it was, "History of Art in the Western World" or some such thing, and I used to spend hours, poring over it, looking at the pictures of paintings and sculptures, memorizing them. Never more than one or two by the same authors...and I don't think there was much in there on the Victorian movements...but I fell in love with Watteau and Fragonard and Boucher...and Michaelangelo and DaVinci and Titian and the like, on the sole basis of two or three images from each artist...I did not have any exposure to photography at all--just books and paintings--which probably has a lot to do with why my work is so heavily influenced by painters, rarther than photographers. (And the JMC connection comes into play because her influences were probably pretty much the same as mine! )

That's the issue I have exactly. I have no problem with overt sexuality in certain circumstances and with a mature woman but parents put make up on eight year olds, give them tight jeans and pierced ears, what the hell is that about? The children don't stand a chance.

We have very similar interest in arts that's for certain. Have you been to Artrenewal [link] because if you haven't you have a very large pleasant surprise in store.
Odd you picked Hylas and the Nymphs as I regularly go to Manchester to see the original. I can sit and look at that painting for an hour along with Mengin's Sappho, one of the most tragically beautiful painting

Sorry, I'm waffling but please do check out artrenewal if you get chance. The site is slow but patience will be rewarded I promise.

Athansor In reply to horai [2007-04-17 02:12:54 +0000 UTC]

Yes...overt sexuality has it's place...but IMHO it's NOT on wee bitty girlies. Makes me sad...

Thanks for the link to Artrenewal--I LOVE that site!!!! It's one of those that I "rediscover" every so often, and always find new and exciting things there. Thanks for being the most recent reason I rediscovered it!

How marvelous that you've seen the original of Hylas and the Nymphs!!!! I never have...but Rossetti's SeaSpell is at a local museum, and I never see it without feeling like someone's punched me in the gut--it is just SO much more powerful in person, than as a tiny image, in a book!!! So I understand how you feel about Hylas et al...and Sappho (another marvelous image!)

Always such a joy to speak with other folks who grok the same art as I do!

Thank you! Yes, she IS a pretty little girl...but I agree with you that this is best in black and white...there's something about here that always makes me think that at night, she goes off to Fairyland... I tried to show that, in this interpretation.

fey/faye/feye means fairy, i didnt know if u knew that and named it intentionally or what. but she looks like one, so the name fits, a definete fav.

LOL!!! Yep--that's the reason I picked the name...I think I first learned that word when I was around 8ish...and I loved to roll it around in my head, thinking how much more "fairy-ish" it was than "fairy". A few years later, when I discovered the word "faerie"--I was just as thrilled! They are such GOOD words, aren't they?! (And you can never have too many ways of saying more or less the same thing!) (And thanks! I'm glad you liked the image! )

yea i first learned the word when i read morgan le faye at about 11 or 12. I love faye a lot better then fairy too. muhc better word!

Oh--that's right!!! Good old Morgan le Faye!!!

Of course, I like "the words less traveled" on general principal..."grey", instead of "gray", for instance. Grey with an "e" sounds so much...well, *greyer*, don't you think?!

wastingwords3 In reply to Athansor [2005-08-07 18:28:20 +0000 UTC]

idk ive always spelled it gray. It just kinda depends on how I learned it or saw it first I geuss. Grey does seem greyer though...

You always say the nicest things! This little girl (she's 11 or 12, I think) is a real beauty--and you'd love the clouds of truly pre-Raphaelite hair she has, flowing down to her waist... (She's a little bit of a thing--her hair is three times fatter than she is! )
