Description this was my first painting that i can say i signed my name on... it is painted in egg tempera and oil on wood.. in the Mischtechnik that derived from the van Eyck brothers in the renaissance. (lots of drawing before though!!!) it is a glazing technique using the egg tempera for building up the paintings values through light, and the oil then for color in a glaze... i learned this technique from Michael Fuchs, a traditional painter and son of Ernst Fuchs. for the past 5 years i have then worked with Ernst as an assistant... Ernst Fuchs and his colleagues in the 50's (Rudolf Hausner, Arik Brauer, Hundertwasser), also known as the 'Fantastic Realists' were the ones that made this technique of painting known again... although it is still something that many do not know anymore or teach it is good fundemental knowledge.

What an amazing painting. I wished I could zoom in on this...I know an artist who paints in egg tempra. His name is Jeremy Smith. He is a Canadian artist. He does have a book out about his work.
Love your work!

The colors are what makes this painting stand out for me. I can't believe that this was the first painting that you signed.

yup, just have to keep studying life and the nature laws of this (well whatever it is), one good tip is to look longer at what you are drawing, and less at the drawing itself.

Amazing - the technical profficiency you display in this piece melded with the more surreal, free flowing and intuitive pieces in your gallery makes me admire you even more. And the background info is intriguing as well, thanks for sharing the history.

this is an amazing painting. It reminds so much of the escher drawings of the crystal ball, but i got say that you have done pretty well. That kind of angle is pretty hard to accomplish and doing it with paint is even more admirable. You're really good.

That's so detailed. It's so refreshing to see someone who really knows what they're doing! I've never used egg tempura, might have to take a class on it sometime.

tempera, ----tempura is the fried veggie stuff thats really tasty --- yes tempera is an exciting medium - Andrew Wyeth (google his name for example of his work) paints mostly in tempera - the technique that i learned to paint in is the 'Mischtechnik' - which means layering oil and tempera glazes, this comes from the Van Eyck brothers in the renaissance... one can achieve very transparent colors, as well as tighten the details by working in layers... 'Ernst Fuchs' is a contemporary artist that has worked mostly in this technique - i studied with one of his sons (Michael Fuchs), then worked with Ernst as an assistent for quite a few years...

Beatifully, executed. I've always admired traditional oil techniques and wished I had someone to teach me; my own experiments have fallen short of my expectations. Is this a tribute to Escher? I'm sure you know what piece I'm refering to. And how does the title "Myopia" relate to the work? If I'm not mistaken, myopia means to be short sighted or stupid. Are you slyly calling the viewer stupid because they cannot understand the meaning? lol Perhaps its the world being confined within the periferies of the reflection, hence a limited, myopic world? lol I'll stop rambling, I'd really like to know though. I browsed through your gallery and I also like the peice about distracting subjective voices, I think I can relate. But this peice is my fav. Great work

wow- crazy link- painting ON spheres does not look like an easy task.. thanks for the props! if you really want to learn traditional painting techniques, you just have to go in search of the information, ask questions, read books, and start doing more studies from life... i had a peek at your gallery, and as your imagination is overflowing, you could use some more base skills of drawing banal objects, and anatomy - drawing from life gives you tools to use when then working from your imagination!! i just looked up Myopia in the cambridge dictionary online, and to my surprise you are right! woa - i then realised i never looked it up - i thought it meant 'My World', my perspective... but now that i have read the meaning, it doesn't seem to be so wrong: 'inability to see distant things clearly' is what it said... but strange... thanks - i painted this like 6 or 7 years ago and no one has tipped me off on the meaning! but stupid...naw-the dictionary didn't say that... i like your thought pattern of playing with the viewer, and about the reflection being limited, yes that was more of what i was originally thinking - the reflection of my experience being captured in a sphere. as for it being a tribute to Escher, i do very much appreciate and respect his work, but no it isn't a direct tribute... this metal ball was in my teachers studio, and it leant itself so well to being a difficult and challenging object to study... this painting was kind of like my diploma...
if you have some questions about painting... don't be shy to ask

why you don't have more views on this piece I do no understand. The technique is astounding, and it brings to mind Escher's style into mind as well with the use of portraying yourself in the relfection of sphere.
