Description I am aware of that paper claiming T. rex have croc faces, there isn't enough evidence for that and at the time of this writing I think its stupid. Not to mention I did this illustration last year anyway.

Sometime around September 2016 I had the idea of getting a fully posable T. rex model made. I happened to be in contact with Tony Mcvey , a world renowned sculptor that has worked on things like Star Wars Return of the Jedi. We both agreed that having feathers on this model would probably not do well under repeated handling so I set out to design a naked rex. This was the result of that process, it was made to be the most accurate rex possible, ya know, excluding the feathers. I spent like way too long noodling on this, making everything just right. I hope the naked bird look comes across, that was definitely the intent.

Anyways, the model is complete now, the ultimate in art reference technology. Everything is posable, even the eyes and tongue. Since I'm sure you guys wanna see some photos, you can check them out below or for more go here.

Are you planning on mass reproducing the model for sale? A fully posable T. rex model would be sweet to own, considering how rare fully posable toys or models are.

Maybe just the dorsum could have feathers.

Love the detail, and scaling; I've been looking for inspirations/examples of proper/realistic scaling for the creatures that i'm using in my story and am glad to have found this gallery! 😁

You know, maybe, just maybe, feathers on adult Tyrannosaurus and close kin were limited to the upper side of the trunk (torso).

I love the thick grizzly-bear like lips this Rex is sporting. Gives the animal a really unique look when you cover up those trademark chompers. IMHO that's a far more interesting change than scales Vs Feathers.

There are no extant archosaurs with lips, and the snout texture of tyrannosaurs are very similar to that of a crocodile. Crocodiles have a single, mudcracked sheet of keratin plastered over their entire snout, much like how a bird's snout is covered in a keratin sheet too (aka a beak). A paper (from I believe Horner and Scanlon?) conveyed that a sheet of keratin would be plastered over the head of triceratops as well. This further supports the notion that dinosaurs had keratin-covered faces. The fact that many archosaur clades evolved lipless beaks indepednently (ornithischian, nigersaurus-like diplodicids, multiple maniraptoran branches, pterosaurs) would suggest that at the least a "proto-beak" texture (like a croc face) would have been pretty universally present throughout archosauria. The lack of lips to impede the evolutionary advance of the keratin sheet past the mouth line would explain how beaks were so easily evolved by archosaurs. Also, Mark Witton conveyed on his blog that the relationship between lips and healthy teeth is more complicated than once believed, and that it is plausible that dinosaurs may not have needed to keep their teeth hydrated.

TL:dR: I think the "croc-faced" dinosaur hypothesis is the probable. Dinos may have lacked lips.

Just so you know, it has now been established that T.Rex did not have feathers, at least not across the whole body. It might have had them in small patches here and there but for the most part it was covered in scales. Some of it's relatives however where covered in them.

Who the f*ck cares. Feathers look awesome. Scales look awesome.
Both are possible. You will probably never get any more evidence then that.
