Description This ended up taking a whole lot longer than expected. Around 30 hours, with over 10 just on the metal undercarriage. But I'm really happy with how it turned out, so definitely worth it!

The reason for the extra effort is because I'm going to meet Summer on the weekend, and get her to sign my drawing. Will upload the signed pic next week

Update: In the end I wasn't able to get Summer's autograph or opinion on the drawing, as she had an audition for a new role and had to stay on her side of the world. One day it'll happen, I'm sure

Tools:

- A3 Bristol Smooth
- B and 2B mech pencils
- Tombo Mono eraser
- Tissues and tortillons
- Photoshop to get rid of tiny dust etc, and fix up contrast lost by scanner.
- Sarah Connor Chronicles and Firefly

Overall

Vision

Originality

Technique

Impact

Before getting to the nitty gritty it is important for me to note that I am expressing my personal response, and this is not meant as learned or objective judgement. Your work is so refined and meticulously detailed to perfection, and there's nothing beyond this that I could say about your technique. You are simply a master of your craft, of a caliber not many could match, and I admire your skill.

That said, I find myself wondering why a master like yourself did not look to add something to this image that we have not seen already in the reference photo you used, which I and most others are keenly familiar with. I give huge credit to designer/s and art director/s of this poster for the conceptual and creativity that allowed us, other artists to be inspired by... I wish so much that you would interpret this in an original manner that would have expanded it, "paint" some new meaning, twist it in a suprising way, or even conjure some new thoughts. As it is, your image is overwhelmingly technical, because ALL the other virtues were there beforehand. I remember the first time I saw the poster, I was struck by it, admiring the image, the concept, and no escape: Summer Glau - dead gorgeous amazing face and expression. I was really completely overcome by it, so much so that as good as your image is, there is not much left there to be new to me, other than, as I said, the fact that your execution is absolutely, stunningly perfect.

So here you go. I am actually giving you tons of credit, knowing that you CAN take this to ANOTHER place (I don't care if it is a BETTER or WORSE place, as long as it is one that I haven't anticipated - ) and it doesn't need to be too far, but far enough to have something - even tiny - NEW.

There is no doubt about your skill. I would like to challenge you to believe that you can go even further - beyond your fantastic dexterity - where your art can become brilliantly conceptual. Because to do what you do - one needs to be very very brilliant - and you have achieved greatness on this aspect, now show this other side of yours. write some visual and conceptual poetry that is as great as your skill, and as we all deserve to witness....

Wow. What can I say? Very well put!

I absolutely agree with you. I've spent a number of years now drawing references, honing my graphite skills, working as hard as I can to not put a hair out of place. I've learned a lot this way, and am so happy with the results that it's difficult to stray from this practice.

I have wanted to add a more conceptual nature to my work, but honestly, I'm (aggravatingly) scared of failing. I clearly need to overcome this, or you wouldn't have taken the time to point it out.

I really appreciate the feedback, and I hope you enjoy my future attempts, whether good or woeful lol.

And I agree that the reference photo is spectacular. Glad I could do it justice!

Now it is my turn to say WOW! I was so damn right about you, sir. I was reluctant almost to say what I said so bluntly... But your thoughtful and humble response reflects who YOU are almost better than your drawing. I am so convinced that you will reach that summit soon, like I feel I did, over which the new, maybe the promised, land will stretch before you with sudden clarity, and all this wisdom that drove your dexterity to the incredible level you reached, will manifest itself with thought in words and language and content that is profound, deep, layered and interconnected... This would be such an amazing AHHAHH moment for you, equivalent to a mental orgasm... That good.. and then... It will be smooth sailing in the ocean of maturity, philosophical sophistication, almost like having given the power to prophesies - the answers to the burning question of WHY will become as clear to you as the answers you mastered for the question of HOW.

You  need not rush anything. It is evident that this process has already begun for you, and in many ways I wish for you that you will get there slower than faster, because the journey there is what will give this experience depth.

I feel honored that you allowed me to cross your path this way. Continue to enjoy your trip. Keep in touch.

Hmm.. how did you get a B and HB  to go so dark ? nice work tho..

Layering I use thick paper, so I can go over an area as many times as I like without breaking through. I'm not a fan of the roughness of 4B etc, so I spend a little more time making 2B darker and smoother.

Excellent job Jake.

Like Paul I've had it on my list too. I did a crude drawing on the PC when i first started.

The extra time and effort really shows, well done and I home she will sign it for you.

Need to finish off some other projects first.
