I mean, I know Zim has a short temper and is delusional... but I can't help but feel sorry for him through the course of the show D:

I think that deep down he is aware that no one approves of anything he does. So in order to survive, he has to create a sort of fantasy in which as long as he has his own approval, everything is okay.
But his shame/fear definitely shows through on occasions, such as when he has to plead with the Tallests to let him take on the mission. ("An opportunity to prove myself is all that I ask...")
And yeah, Mopiness was a sad one

That is a pretty possible theory. And in Mopiness of Doom is shows that he can feel sadness. Maybe it was more then just Dib that he was feeling sad about.

Yeah ;^; Mopiness of Doom is kind of a strange concept to me... it's as though Zim has a period of lucidity during that episode. o_o
