Maybe a frame or some text or something. Or both. I've noticed that fractals tend to look sharper and better when you define a clear focal point, and a frame tends to do that for some reason.

GIMP could easily do the trick. For the most part, all you have to do is go over the outer edges with the pencil tool. I'd recommend 3 or 4 px size. Also, for effect, if it works good with the fractal, you could use the Soft Glow filter tool. I can't really tell how to get to the tool mind you, since I haven't used GIMP since I got Photoshop. Just play around with stuff in GIMP. Once you find stuff you like, use it again.
Oh, and another piece of advice, don't be afraid to raise the rendering quality level. It takes longer, but the results are always great. Usually, I do my quality in a range of 14,000 to 20,000.
