1stly , APCR great photo. Consider yourself watched.
2ndly , not getting in to who's done what and where, but them there trees appear to be a hell of lot bigger than 6 inches. Now , based on the
SURROUNDINGS of THE PHOTO AT HAND, I would take my chances with that rather biggish tree slightly to the right of the soldier to stop 1 or more
5.56's over that tin hat he's wearing any day.
Now obviously this photo could mean any number of scenarios , which means it is impossible to conclude the correct or incorrect movements this soldier
should or should not be taking.
If indeed the soldier was aware the enemy was close by, but out of the line of fire , then his movements in open ground as possibly suggested here
would be warranted. Proceed with caution.
And obviously if contact has been made , whether by him or by them , it would probably be a good idea to hug the trees and / or kiss the dirt,
depending on the situation presented. Seems a far better option than moving forward in open spaces, which i think all 1972 is saying.
Again proceed with caution. Take cover etc
I didn't realise a forest/ jungle type environment was the same as a desert environment? Am curious.
Key point, photo says " SLOW ADVANCE ." That's all we know. Slow advance to what? Another assumption folks.
How can anyone say what this soldiers behaviour should be?
Slow Advance of one soldier . It does not tell who else could be in the picture , therefore , the photo cannot be interpreted fully.
So i reckon Gozer and 1972 are both right.

Not hardly. You could be on top of an enemy position before you see it.
Just as the first round strikes you.
Move from tree to tree keeping them between you and where you think they might be.
Lots of good cover out there!

US Army 72 Vietnam LRRP operative.
Detached to CIA special activities.
Spent most of the time infiltrating and observation on the HoChiMinh.
Old days before the electronic warfare of your days. Eyes on the ground to bring the hell on earth. Nothing says love like a carpet bombing run or watching gun ships light up the night.
So I know a bit about moving in a forest type environment. Our "volunteer" mission lasted just over 10 months. Once Charlie went back to the peace talks we got pulled out.

Go back and steal some more quotes from wikipedia remf. The day we use wasd for movement and an xbox controller for a trigger is the day you can say anything to me. I'm still on active duty, note me your name and unit and I'll have G1 look you up, go ahead I'll wait. Yeah, I'm callin you out remf...

Funny how you go to a VFW and every Vietnam vet is a ranger, MACV SOG recon, Special Forces.... never once met a clerk, cook or mechanic...

Why the hatred?
You angry about something?
Hell son you got parades.
All I said was he needs to make better use of cover.
You learn that in basic.

No hatred, just your dumb remark about a slow advance and stumbling on a position. I'm sure you've read 7-7, 7-8, 7-10 ad nauseum...you only use movement to contact (I assume you know what that is) once you know the enemy location. You don't learn that in basic...
A tree isn't cover, even 5.56 will core through a 6 inch tree, a tree is concealment at best. Plenty of parades for everyone to go around now.

Roger that.....sorry to have annoyed you.
I should have know better by your vastly superior service.
Let me know when our parade rolls by.
I will get my greens cleaned.
The stain from the blood thrown on me when I came home on leave is still visible.
I never forgot the chant
"Baby killer, baby killer!"
So much love in those days.
So much love.
Good night.
I got work tomorrow.
Open Carry here in Texas. My state office detail should be real interesting.
Nice photos from Hawaii.
