Description
"Apostrophe to the Ocean"

There is a pleasure in the pathless woods,
There is a rapture on the lonely shore,
There is society where none intrudes,
By the deep Sea, and music in its roar:
I love not Man the less, but Nature more,
From these our interviews, in which I steal
From all I may be, or have been before,
To mingle with the Universe, and feel
What I can ne'er express, yet cannot all conceal.

Roll on, thou deep and dark blue Ocean--roll!
Ten thousand fleets sweep over thee in vain;
Man marks the earth with ruin--his control
Stops with the shore;--upon the watery plain
The wrecks are all thy deed, nor doth remain
A shadow of man's ravage, save his own,
When for a moment, like a drop of rain,
He sinks into thy depths with bubbling groan,
Without a grave, unknelled, uncoffined, and unknown.

His steps are not upon thy paths,--thy fields
Are not a spoil for him,--thou dost arise
And shake him from thee; the vile strength he wields
For earth's destruction thou dost all despise,
Spurning him from thy bosom to the skies,
And send'st him, shivering in thy playful spray
And howling, to his gods, where haply lies
His petty hope in some near port or bay,
And dashest him again to earth: --there let him lay.

The armaments which thunderstrike the walls
Of rock-built cities, bidding nations quake,
And monarchs tremble in their capitals.
The oak leviathans, whose huge ribs make
Their clay creator the vain title take
Of lord of thee, and arbiter of war;
These are thy toys, and, as the snowy flake,
They melt into thy yeast of waves, which mar
Alike the Armada's pride, or spoils of Trafalgar.

Thy shores are empires, changed in all save thee -
Assyria, Greece, Rome, Carthage, what are they?
Thy waters wasted them while they were free
And many a tyrant since: their shores obey
The stranger, slave, or savage; their decay
Has dried up realms to deserts: not so thou,
Unchangeable save to thy wild waves' play -
Time writes no wrinkle on thine azure brow -
Such as creation's dawn beheld, thou rollest now.

Thou glorious mirror, where the Almighty's form
Glasses itself in tempests; in all time,
Calm or convulsed--in breeze, or gale, or storm,
Icing the pole, or in the torrid clime
Dark-heaving;--boundless, endless, and sublime -
The image of Eternity--the throne
Of the Invisible; even from out thy slime
The monsters of the deep are made; each zone
Obeys thee: thou goest forth, dread, fathomless, alone.

And I have loved thee, Ocean! and my joy
Of youthful sports was on thy breast to be
Borne like thy bubbles, onward: from a boy
I wantoned with thy breakers--they to me
Were a delight; and if the freshening sea
Made them a terror--'twas a pleasing fear,
For I was as it were a child of thee,
And trusted to thy billows far and near,
And laid my hand upon thy mane--as I do here.

Another English project, my interpretation of Lord Byron's poem!  I love this poem so much, because of its lovely descriptions of the ocean and the feeling of man as a child standing on Nature's shores -- the majestic to the wondering, innocent creature.

My first thoughts on this is "Wow! It's absolutely stunning!"
Looking deeper though, what I actually find most appealing about this artwork is the fantastic colour scheme, the technique used and the water crashing against the rocks. It's so well executed that I can almost hear the sound of water from just looking at it. I especially like the way the water is clearly flowing in a direction past the boy. I really like the subtle warm and cool colours you have put together. The warm orange in the sky is especially beautiful and not to overpowering at the same time.

Nitpicking this (since this is a critique) I couldn't help but feel it were missing a little more of the enchanting scenery. I would have just liked this work to be a little more on the landscape orientation than portrait. Looking at it, my eye first lands on the boy and his red pants against the blues, and then travels up toward the horizon, and then travels to the left. Then I sort of felt like I didn't know where to go next and it sort of led me out of the page.

Another thing I really liked about this piece is that you don't necessarily see everything upon first glance. I didn't see the birds near the mountains on the top left there, nor did I see that the boy was holding a boat. The boat then sort of tells me a story in that he wants to sail his boat but the water is a little too rough.

The boy, as I mentioned before, is great to lead the eye into the scene, but I do feel he is slightly disconnected from the world around him. I think it is perhaps the white line around him, especially around his ankles, that sort of makes him come forward from the rock that he is standing on.

Overall, this is a very good artwork and you should definitely be proud of it. From a distance, I feel it suffers a little, but when looking at it closer it is much better. Keep up the great work!

Thanks for the compliments and very thoughtful critique! I'll put my responses here if it's not too much to read:

Your feeling about how the picture leads you is a very valuable opinion for me. I only planned the curved shoreline on the left leading to the lighthouse, but I can see now that the lead needs to end up somewhere, maybe back to the boy.

Ah yes, and the white outline. On hindsight it was my attempt to bring more focus to the boy - the original lines were in pencil, and since I felt I failed to create enough contrast between his skintone and the white waves, I resorted to outlining in white, a technique used much more professionally (but sparingly) in manga. Again, your feeling is very true, and I appreciate the feedback.

Why, in your opinion, do you think it "suffers a little" when viewed from a distance?

Thanks again for such wonderful critique!

I'm glad you didn't mind. I hope I didn't seem too blunt I thought that may have been why you did the white lines around him. A very common practice for professionals in manga as you said. I think maybe it might have been better for the white line to have a slight blue tinge to it so it's not as stark white against the background, and the white could have a little brown tinge on it where the rock is.

I think the reason why I feel it suffers a little from a distance is because there isn't a lot to really draw you in to see more. You sort of (think that you) see everything straight away. Also, from a distance at a thumbnail view, I thought that it all looked a little flatter. Does that make sense? These are my opinions of course, others probably feel much differently.

That's a good strategy!

So not enough to catch the eye, and not enough spatial dimensions? Yes, I'll need to work on those too. Thanks

Wow... You have absolutely amazing talent. your color choice here is very appealing, especially with the way you've colored the clouds. Also, I'm highly impressed when it comes to the depth you've added simply by providing less detail in the background than you did in the foreground.

The only negative about this would be the the cut out look of the bok from the rest of the picture. While it's clear you didn't want him to get lost in the picture (I'm assuming), it just doesn't match the rest of what you've painted.

However, you did an amazing job with shading and highlighting him and the rest of the picture.

This is a brilliant piece, I can see why you would be proud of it. The star ratings just had to be high for this one.

The firs thing that caught my attention was the water. The way the waves crash against the rocks looks so violent, but at the same time it still seems like the ocean is extremely calm. It's a beautiful technique.

Then my eyes went to the sky. The mix of colours you've used here work and blend so well together, and the birds in the distance make a perfect addition.

The boy and boat give the painting a nostalgic, yet euphoric feel that I absolutely love. It's a beautiful feeling.

Your use of different colours that stand out next to each other but blend together so peacefully is incredible. It's a good technique to use on larger areas (like your ocean and sky) so it doesn't seem like a dull, one tone area (although that can work well for some paintings).

I look forward to seeing more wonderful pieces in your gallery.

Wonderful artistic effects all round, particularly around the sea that's really nice. My only small criticism would be the figure in the foreground, he looks a bit stuck into the painting? Great work!

By "stuck into the painting" do you mean he looks like a cut-out, that's out of place? A few others have told me the same, and I do see that as a big problem. But thanks for pointing it out! I love critiques <3
