Description Hatshepsut “Foremost of Noble Ladies”(1508-1458 BC), fifth pharaoh of the 18th Dynasty, New Kingdom. Ma'at-ka-Re Hatshepsut, the daughter of Tuthmosis I and Ahmes (sister of Amenophis I), is generally believed to have ruled Egypt as pharaoh for approximately 22 years.

She asserted her claim to be the sovereign rather than the “King's Great Wife” or queen consort and was unique because she wore several of the typically “male” adornments, including the false beard, male clothing and had herself depicted as a pharaoh.

Upon the death of her father, Hatshepsut claimed her birthright as it was proclaimed in the Oracle of Amun and had these declarations by the God Amun carved on her monuments: “Welcome my sweet daughter, my favorite, the King of Upper and Lower Egypt, Maatkare, Hatshepsut. Thou art the Pharaoh, taking possession of the Two Lands.”

During Hatshepsuts reign, she commissioned hundreds of building projects throughout Upper and Lower Egypt, including her mortuary temple at Deir el Bahri. It is written that one of her trade caravans returned by boat on the Nile with 31 live myrrh trees from the Land of Punt. These were placed around her funerary temple.

I have always greatly admired Hatshepsut...her strength...her beauty...her tenacity...and her conviction.

I would like to thank Alicia Charles for the use of her photography [link] She made a stunning Hatshepsut

Have you read "Child of the Morning" by Pauline Gedge? It was a super book and tells basically her whole life story

As a matter of fact, Pauline Gedge is one of my favorite authors I've read and own everything she's written about Ancient Egypt. In fact, I was thinking about her portrayal of Hatshepsut as I worked on this!
I also love Judith Tarr, Wilbur Smith and Christian Jacq. Have you ever read any of their work??? If you like Pauline Gedge...you'll like them too! Same attention to historic detail.

My god I only realized she had more Egyptian books a few weeks ago, because I had only read the one, and now I so want to go out and read everything! She's an incredible author

No, I haven't.. if you don't mind my asking, what kind of history do they do? I mean is it Egypt or another time period?

Pauline's books are awesome!!!! There's one called Lady of the Reeds that I HIGHLY recommend! Of course, I don't think she's written anything that I didn't soak up like water! They're the best books!

Judith Tarr writes LOTS of great historical novels. She has several about the Ancient Egyptians, one about the Byzantines, one about the Hittites (I think) and one that you HAVE to read...Household Gods. Won't tell you the story..it would ruin it but it takes place in Ancient Rome.

Wilbur Smith has written a whole series about Ancient Egypt. I believe they start with River God. There are four in the series I think.

Christian Jacq also writes almost exclusively about Ancient Egypt as well.

It's funny, I really prefer books about ancient civilizations... (unless it's REALLY good or an Anne Rice novel ).

Gary Jennings is another good author...Aztec and Raptor...awesome books too!

Wow, well I'm glad they're all good And oh my god, a book about the Ancient Romans? I've wanted to read something good about that for ages Awesome, I'll have to check that out asap Can you tell me the basic plot? Haha, I love Anne Rice Well, I love Interview with the Vampire and several others of hers (Pandora would be one of those)

My fav Anne Rice is the Witching Hour series But I love all of her writing!

Okay...just a little of the story. Woman comes home after a long day at work, exhausted, and looks at a painting on her bedside table of the Roman deities of the household. She wishes she lived during that time period...simpler time. So...guess what Okay...that's all!!! Trust me...you'll LOVE it!

All of the books that I've listed are historically accurate enough to be almost educational and I think that's why I love them so much. You learn all sorts of interesting little known facts about ancient civilizations.

Oh wow cool Sounds interesting. Oh yeah, I love that It's so great when you're learning history but not really being aware of it I'm reading this one now Fall of Giants by Ken Follett and it's awesome because I love the storyline and I'm learning more about WWI than I ever did in school. That might not be your cup of tea, but it's so cool how he can flawlessly explain it to you and have you love the characters at the same time But I've loved ancient civilizations and the like ever since I was introduced to them in grade 6 (not too long ago I suppose) But still. There's so much history, and I'm sad they couldn't teach us more in school. Oh well, it leaves us to do the work for ourselves

Ken Follett is really a great author! Had some of his stuff...the dog chewed one of the books up though
You might like John Jakes too! Try the book Homeland! Michael and Kathleen O'Neal Gear write some great books about Native Americans (very well researched and excellent reads!!!!! ).

Yeah...they leave a LOT of history out in school. It's really sad the things they don't teach. Or the fact that we never had to read any of the classics like my parents did.

But you're right too...ferreting out all the good books is fun and learning on your own lets you explore as much or as little as you choose

There is a wonderful book, "Child of the Morning" written by Pauline Gedge that follows Hatshepsut's life (historic novel). I HIGHLY recommend it! Excellent read. this is very beautiful you did a very good job. if you want to improve it more, i would suggest that you push you dark colors in order to give this piece more depth.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Annezon In reply to Izzabell [2011-02-06 14:15:59 +0000 UTC]

Thank you for the kind words and constructive criticism. It is always welcome!
I think the lack of depth may be due to the fact that I was trying to keep the background more subdued and put an overlay on it. I wanted the portrait to pop and have the background secondary. Maybe I should have used a different color and opacity for my overlay? I'll play around with it and see what happens.
Thank you again
