Description Hatshepsut “Foremost of Noble Ladies”(1508-1458 BC), fifth pharaoh of the 18th Dynasty, New Kingdom. Ma'at-ka-Re Hatshepsut, the daughter of Tuthmosis I and Ahmes (sister of Amenophis I), is generally believed to have ruled Egypt as pharaoh for approximately 22 years.

She asserted her claim to be the sovereign rather than the “King's Great Wife” or queen consort and was unique because she wore several of the typically “male” adornments, including the false beard, male clothing and had herself depicted as a pharaoh.

Upon the death of her father, Hatshepsut claimed her birthright as it was proclaimed in the Oracle of Amun and had these declarations by the God Amun carved on her monuments: “Welcome my sweet daughter, my favorite, the King of Upper and Lower Egypt, Maatkare, Hatshepsut. Thou art the Pharaoh, taking possession of the Two Lands.”

During Hatshepsuts reign, she commissioned hundreds of building projects throughout Upper and Lower Egypt, including her mortuary temple at Deir el Bahri. It is written that one of her trade caravans returned by boat on the Nile with 31 live myrrh trees from the Land of Punt. These were placed around her funerary temple.

I have always greatly admired Hatshepsut...her strength...her beauty...her tenacity...and her conviction.

I would like to thank Alicia Charles for the use of her photography [link] She made a stunning Hatshepsut

I think you've already arrived, yup there you are

You are very talented and you don't need any recognition for that to be true... It's very impressive if you can create something so lifelike in just a day and a half. I really struggle with portraits for some reason just can't get my head around them.

Thank you!!!
I struggle with backgrounds! I hate them! Like I said, once I'm past the portrait, I get bored and really struggle. I think the portraits that you did are really good!
Now...there's no way I could come up with some of the really cool, abstract ideas that you have! Like I said, it's like modern art deco (some of it) and I LOVE the concepts!!!

This painting is stunning. Is it digital painting or do you use traditional art materials?

This is digital. I always used acrylics until I discovered the Wacom tablet
This one turned out really well. Of course, my reference model is so beautiful

Cool. I know how it can be. Everything can get a head of you from time to time.We had some company yesterday and I never sat down in front of my computer at all. It was fun though, a nice change of pace, it's occasionally good for me to remember that I'm not actually physically attached to the thing. LOL. Sometimes one might wonder.

Talk later Beltane Baby.

BrandonPilcher In reply to ??? [2011-03-17 20:38:22 +0000 UTC]

From a purely technical perspective, this is impressive, but beyond that I really dislike your depiction of Hatshepsut. She is way too pale for a Kemetic queen. Egyptians are seldom this light-skinned even today despite 2,500 years of mixing with various European and Middle Eastern groups. She should at the very lightest be olive-skinned, although a dark mahogany-brown complexion (like this ) would be best if you want her to look typical for her population.

Normally I don't go around DA correcting people for misportraying the Egyptians, as that is way too common, but since this is a very popular work I feel like giving a dissenting opinion.

Dude, you totally missed the program on the history channel talking about what she looked like. They confirmed that she was actually "dark" as you would call it. Take your prejudices somewhere else.

Beautifully done! I'm a HUGE Ancient Egyptian fan and Hatshepsut has always been my favourite female Pharaoh. Definitely! I always enjoy a female sticking it to the male establishment and proving that women can rule just as effectively as men can.

You're VERY welcome! Awwwwwwww...

Lovely work! First, I adore Hatshepsut, next, this is fabulous. Your soft coloring is wonderful and adds to that element of realism and I like the head dress. You did a nice job on the stripes and portraying this strong, untraditional Egyptian woman. Agreed that Hatshepsut is awesome! >3< I like the blurred background too, it really draws the eye to Hatshepsut and helps convey the setting too.

Thank you so much You are so kind! I'm glad you like the blurred background...that was what I was hoping for. I wanted her to stand out from the picture...for the background to be secondary.
I've always loved her mortuary temple It's a truly beautiful piece of architecture that I SWEAR I'm going to see in person one of these days

I just love this. I don't know how many times I've enjoyed it and attempted to comment without being able to find the words.

There's something in the facial expression that just leaves little doubt that you are in the company of divinity. Being named for or taking the name of the life force of Ma'at and Ra is a reflection of the power and wisdom behind the eyes.

Great Stuff! Hope to see more sacred art from you soon.
