Description AT LAAAAAAST!!!

Originally my Iron Phoenix was not suppose to be plain steel. It was suppose to have a bit of rust to give it some color and variation.

UNFORTUNATELY, for ease of construction, I ended up buffing a lot of the rust off during my initial construction. And though I left the plain steel, I was never entirely happy with how it looked. It just felt very unfinished.

Well, this last week, I had the opportunity to remedy that.

Using an Auburn Rust Patina, I liberally coated my phoenix with it, giving it this amazing rusted appearance, more or less how I'd originally intended for it to turn out.

The flames I had to touch up a bit, on account of them getting a bit scratched. And touching up paint of course made the colors a bit more vibrant.

Once I had this done, I realized that the now-darker phoenix didn't stand out against the saw blades as much as it use to. Also, the rather flat and dull colored blades no longer quite 'fit' with the textured, decorative phoenix.

So, to give them a bit more emphasis, I lightly touched a bit of gold and metallic red spray paint to the saw blades, which gave them a bit more color and tied them into the phoenix nicely. It also had the added benefit of making the colored marbles feel more natural with the overall piece. Before, the colorful and shiny marbled just felt a bit off with the overall dull and unfinished feel of the metal. But now that I've colored the phoenix and touched up the saw blades, its added more color and makes the marbles tie in much better.

I finished the phoenix off with a satin clear coat to protect the color, but left the saw blades as is, since the duller metal contrasts nicely with the shinier phoenix.

I also made a stand for the phoenix, which you can partially see here. Now I can display it easily when I'm not able to mount it on the wall.

Your phoenix started this all. It only stands to reason you might go back and pick it up. Regardless your thoughts about it many of us loved the original. Your touches only made it more beautiful. I'd like to see pics from the sides because the sculpture literally emerges from the wall like it is bursting forth on an unsuspecting universe. It among your best work and I'm pleased to see you still enjoy it enough to keep tweaking it.

The saw blades were a really good decision. They add a lot to the piece.

Thank you. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out as a whole, and happy that its finally finished! Having it unfinished for so long was starting to drive me nuts.
