Description "Snow", in Cantonese.

Of all my jewellery styles thus far (that is: chainmaille, wire wrap, and viking knit), although I've spent by far the least time on this one, I rather feel that I might have actually done something to further this field. Or at least, I for one have never seen viking knit chains embellished to such degree. Or even, at all.

To be honest, I was quite happy with previous pieces done with the viking knitting technique. I will, however, admit to feeling like I've done something special with this one, which is, perhaps even more incomprehensible than the previous ones (apparently) were. But making this piece was to some extent draining, and I did not quite arrive at the sense of accomplishment at the end of it, that I had expected. But that isn't really much of a concern, beyond that it is one of those pieces the beauty of which I seem able to forget, and even doubt, when I'm not looking at it. For serious.

Made for my mother, to wear for a wedding she's attending in two weeks. An early Christmas present.

(Incidentally, my 100th deviation in the Jewelry category.)

Thousands of Swarovski Pearls and Crystals, maybe 20 yards of non-tarnish Silver Artistic Wire, maybe 3 - 400 Rolled Sterling Silver jumprings, and a Sterling Silver pinch clasp.

I just made my first crochet piece a few days ago. It was a disaster, it didn't look good at all . So I really admire this necklace, the stitches (don't know how to call it else ) are so regular, nothing seems out of place. And I don't think it's overloaded in any way. If there were more than three colors it would be, but it's only white.

I'm excited about wire crochetting, there are so many possibilities and it's an alternative to wire wrapping from time to time.

I wonder about wire crochet, is an actual crochet needle used? It's not something I've checked out per se, just yet.

Your work is very pretty, by the way.

I just saw that this is a knit necklace, I thought it was crochet .

Yes, I just use a normal crochet needle. It's a lot easier than knitting, so I tried it first. It doesn't take much time, I think that's the biggest advantage of crochetting. I made a new bracelet in the meantime with a different wire and another needle and it worked much better

Thank you! I hope one day I can upload decent jewelry pictures, still working on that

Yes, with wire crochet, you use crochet hooks. There should be some decent you tube videos on it.

Yeah, "overload", "glamour" and "shine" are all words I would use to describe it, too. XD It's pretty weighty, but I think I could do it lighter.

Wow, so this is the piece you were talking about! So pretty! It feels very wintry and icy to me.

About the photo quality, I'm pretty sure the big problem here is the high contrast between the black backdrop and the necklace. The black backdrop is causing your camera to overexpose the white crystals and pearls, leading to glare and a "tinfoil" effect. I find that darker or more neutral backdrops help me photograph dark pieces, and lighter or neutral backdrops help me photograph brighter pieces (likewise, if you'd tried to shoot a dark piece against white, you'd not see the details on the piece, it'd just appear black and grainy). You probably wouldn't want to use white with a piece that's white or it'd disappear into the backdrop, but perhaps a nice ivory or tan or some other fairly calm pastel would work.

I've tried the daylight bulb thing that *elderarc is talking about and it works so-so for me. My pictures still come out a bit grainy if shot indoors, but that could just be because my camera is low-end. It definitely helps though if you have to shoot inside.

AMyriadVice In reply to balthasarcraft [2010-10-05 04:20:45 +0000 UTC]

Excellent, that's how it ought to feel. XD

Yeah, I shied away from white as a background; unfortunately I don't currently have the materials to make any other colour background than black. (Which I suppose, in my case, speaks of my wardrobe. >>;; ) Ah well, thanks for the tip; I'll see what I can come up with another time.

balthasarcraft In reply to AMyriadVice [2010-10-05 04:59:31 +0000 UTC]

It's okay, I tried everything in mine, and only found one really suitable fabric; the rest were either too large of weave or the wrong colour. I find though that the flagstones in my back patio work extremely well and look kind of like sandstone. Maybe something like that?

Thank you so much, elderarc! I'm very glad you think it's beautiful. The picture's pretty crap, I'm trying to make a light box for photographs.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

elderarc In reply to AMyriadVice [2010-10-04 16:39:07 +0000 UTC]

I don't use a lightbox but many people do. I set up an area in a corner of my livingroom on a table, with white and black poster board propped against the wall (depending on the color I'm after I switch it up). I have a lamp that clamps nearby with a daylight bulb in it (the light is much cleaner and not yellowed like with ordinary bulbs). I do that because I get shadows where with my lightbox all was lit.

You're welcome!

AMyriadVice In reply to elderarc [2010-10-04 16:49:38 +0000 UTC]

Ah, thanks for the tips! Sadly I don't have any daylight bulbs in any of the lamps at home, just fluorescent or warm bulbs, neither of which work especially well. Perhaps I'll look into purchasing a lamp and a daylight bulb. I'll need it if I use a lightbox, anyway.

I just got one of those drop lights (it's a shop light with a clamp on it and an aluminum shade so it's reflective. Perfect for photos!) at Walmart for $6 and the daylight bulbs were $5 for a two-pack at Home Depot.

They made such a difference in my photos!
