Assignment to illustrate a sign of the zodiac. This is Aquarious. (It's almost my birthday!)I accidentally painted this backwards, this is the image flipped properly, although it's cropped terribly because it didn't quite fit in my scanner. There's another two inches on top and maybe half an inch on both sides. I painted this with ink and coffee stain, the linework is composites of photocopy transfers. (Of my own drawings.) The photocopy transfer is why ended up painting it backwards.
The waterbearer, and also you can't tell what someone is thinking or how "deep" they are based on what comes out of their mouths. Not everyone can be an epic communicator!

Thanks! Part of the assignment was to create something that would work within the context of being associated with the zodiac, but still work as a stand alone image without the viewer knowing it's intended to have anything to do with the zodiac.

do you mind me asking how you got such an effect with the lines? you used a copier for this??

I did use a copier for this, the head, the teeth, the octopus and the fish were all drawn separately and then photocopied and transfered onto illustration board using oil of wintergreen. part of the effect is from the oil, if you use just a little of it you can get really crisp lines like with the fish, if you use a lot it smears the ink and gets a sort of a hazy effect, like with the skull (the skull is actually two transfers, one smeared up a lot and then a second one I kept sharper, which had a lot of the crosshatching on it.)
part of the mess, though, is because the original was done in mechanical pencil with a lot of smudges, a grid, and a lot of the original construction lines and accidents left only partially erased so they'd photocopy as noise. I had a lot of fun with this project!

yeah, i think the scan sort of saturated it so all the textures were brighter. i showed the original in class but it still looked like a bad faded print.

i lOVE working with coffee stains. Such a natural beauty about it. I like to sit down in a cafe with a latte and draw gestures using the latte as another median.

I haven't used lattes, but I brew strong coffee and add teabags as I want it darker. It's huge fun. And it usually smells delicious, when it's not overpowered by oil of wintergreen.
