Description How many drawings in a storyboarded sequence? Well, here's one. Sequence, that is. At the end of Lilo and Stitch we were cataloging and packing up our story drawings. We got to talking about how thick the piles were. Eventually someone suggested we take a picture of the drawings for one sequence. We used the floor of a large open meeting room in the Florida studio, and brought in a scissor lift as a platform for the photographer. Then we spread out the drawings. We were all surprised just how large an area they covered. Bela Temesvary shot the picture. Then he suggested I sit in the middle of them for posterity.

Now, if you're still reading, bear in mind that this is not just one sequence from the film, but one VERSION of one sequence. Sharp-eyed observers will note that this is the obsolete chase sequence that featured a 747. That version was dropped after September 11. So this entire thing wasn't used. Nor is this the first version of this sequence - I boarded it at least once before this. So this is probably version 2. I boarded it again from scratch at least one more time after this one was scrapped.

Most people board on Cintiq now, but I still do it on paper. It's nice to have original drawings to sit on at the end.

Oml I know much of this sequence! It was incredibly cool in my opinion! Unfortunately, it was too close to home around the time of the movie's release. But the way y'allΒ salvaged the animation and simply put a new coat of paint all over it is very impressive! I also adored the action sequence of this entire scene. One of my favorite scenes of the movie, for sure! I am glad we still have almost-complete footage of what would've been!

It was a really good idea you had.

What great about this photo is that not only is it a kind of monument to the glories of traditional animation, but that it was shot on 4x5 black and white film, possibly the least automatic, least convenient, most demanding photographic format available.

(Well except for people trying to recreate daguerreotypes, but breathing mercury vapor may possibly count as a little too retro.)

Sigh.

Living in the Deep South, where practically everyone is a farmer and the most common hobbies/passtimes are football, hunting, and fishing, I frequently get funny looks coupled with the question "Why do you watch cartoons and animation?"
Now, whenever I get asked this, I'll just show them this. It takes alot of hard work, patience, and skill to make a good animation. It can take HOURS to make one decent drawing, so to make thousands of drawings, and then arrange them so that they move, and then use them to tell stories... Animation is a fantastic medium that doesn't get nearly the credit it should. I love your work and the stories you tell with it, and can't wait to see what you do next!

It's not surprising. It does take 24 drawings for one second of a movie.

Looking forward to How To Train Your Dragon 3 and The Croods 2!

How is your leg positioned like that? Like, are you laying back and supporting yourself with 2 hands and one leg, while holding the other upwards? Or are you doing some sort of yoga-like crossed leg balance thing? XD

Well Chris Sanders this is very impressive seeing all those drawings scattered around you like that. As I`m currently studying animation in Uni I can clearly see how many thousands of drawings would be needed for these animated movies.

I have Lilo & Stitch on DVD at home and I have the old 747 chase scene on my DVD with other deleted scenes, I loved the 747 sequence better than the space ship sequence and I SO wish you could have kept it. But don`t worry I understand why you had to change it because of September 11 (and of course the space ship makes more sense to how Jumba and Pleakley got to Earth).

By the way I just thought I`d let you know that I myself have acctually tried to make a fan attempt to restore the 747 scene, by trying to replace the un-coloured shots with the coloured shots from the final version, and also trying to carry the sequence onwards from where you stopped animating it. It was quite trickey to restore the scene since some un-coloured shots couldn`t be replaced and towards the end I had to use some of the un-animated shots from the first version of the sequence to replace the shots of Jumba`s ship, but this could at least give people an impression to how the scene might have turned out when finished. Here`s the link to it:

I`ve also attepmted to restore 2 other deleted scenes from the movie, Stitch`s Trial and the original version of Stitch and Jumba`s fight in Lilo`s house. Here are the links:Β Β

I still remember going to Disney world back in Nov. 2001, we got a tour of some studio, and I got to see some animators working on a Lilo and Stitch scene. It was quite magical to me at the time. *.*

Loved that movie!

Wow, that is a lot! I think people sometimes forget how much work and development and planning go into an animated movie (or any movie for that matter). Not just the actual creating of the movie, but the script writing, the character creating, the very beginning where you have an idea and spend countless days building on it. Then comes the pre-production of a movie, then the actual movie creation, then the post production!

Mr. Sanders, I have to say that I've always admired your work and your style. I especially like how in Lilo and Stitch, the human characters deviated from the usual Disney features. It gave the film a unique feel.

Wonderful work!

From 1995-2004, pretty much all Disney movies were really disapointing. Except from Lilo and Stitch, The Emporer's New Groove (SMASH IT WITH A HAMMA) and for a disney sequel, Stitch Has A Glitch was nothing short of amazing.

I would jump at the chance to be an art director, for video game, animated movie, whatever. I suppose it's just a selfish need to leave my mark - any mark - on the world that does't involve the death of 70 people and requesting a PS3 in prison, but looking through your gallery and sketchbooks, you've honestly made my favourite movies, and some of the favourite pieces of art in general.

...too personal. And wordy. Whatever. I'm sure this ilttle mini-paragraph will turn it from a pretentious spewing of one's boring artistic dreams to a humorous litle snippet of self-awareness.

Everytime my art program crashes on me from now on, ill look at this picture and think that picture I spent a couple hours on that got completely cleared? I lost nothing compared to this entire section being just chucked out.Β

I wish I could get a more clear view of all the art, everything that gets tossed out from these amazing films. What I wouldnt give to see the creativity and ideas that were once sketched out
