Whoops, my b. I spent a while trying to word it and sort of gave up in the end.

Basically it's to answer the question "if snowflakes are different from one another, why do individual snowflakes still have symmetry?". Two separate snowflakes may be in two totally different air pockets feet apart, but individual snowflakes are super tiny. Any change in conditions that affects the crystal growth on one part of the snowflake will affect the rest of that flake just because "weather" takes place over a big area but flakes are small.
