Dunno! Most agencies think they're not widely known because in the pre-social-media days everyone just assumed it was a random loud noise. Now we can immediately hop online, compare experiences, collect other data, and realize something actually happened.
It's also much more common in certain cold climes than others. I couldn't find a map of global data but in the US it's much more concentrated on the Great Lakes region and the midwest than other areas - probably has to do with temperature fluctuations and soil content.
