Description A tiny 1mm(0.4 Inch) Aphid (Plant lice) leaping through the pink savanna (a Pink powder puff flower).

The technique-
I use a Canon 450D with a combination of:
Full set of Extension tubes
Canon F2.8 100mm Macro lens
Reversed mounted Canon 1.8 50mm
(in that order)

I shoot inside a light box with one flash in order to flood the box with light, the extreme magnification with the flash and colorful flowers/backgrounds gives a very vivid result.

shutter is set to around 1/200
Aperture on the 100mm lens is on F14 - (as a balance between a grater DOF (around 1mm) and still keeping it sharp (diffraction with this combination is very enhanced)
the 50mm lens focus is set to infinity, and the aperture is open wide.
focusing is done by moving the camera backward and forward, and the magnification is set by the focus ring on the 100mm lens.

I prefer shooting Aphids since they are pretty still and don't move that much or that fast, plus, since they are about 1-3mm so they can fit into the extremely shallow DOF (and they are extremely cute!)
the average magnification with this combination is around 3:1.

And Thank you very much for all the comments, faves and features!!! (:

Stunning colour contrast! Thanks for sharing how you accomplished this amazing work of art, by the way; I'm left wonder about all the little moments I don't see because I'm not close enough.

I have been doing this also, with the same 2 lenses (Nikon), however I don't have any tubes yet. I am getting (hopefully will be here today) a 2x teleconverter I hope to try with this combination. I am very impressed with the colors and sharpness you obtained here! Wonderful job!!! I hope to be able to achieve something similar eventually!

Nice shot,
Have you tried a macro belows before ?
I was watching a cheap macro tutorial on cheesycam, its an extendable system on
rails like extension tubes only the extension is adjustable via a rail.
I was thinking of checking one out --> [link]

I own the 100mm f2.8 macro and tried holding the 50mm 1.8 wide open backwards onto the end for some test shots..
Needed a ton of light.
I definately will need to pick up a focusing rail and a tripod as well ,dof is too shallow to make hand held much fun.

AimishBoy In reply to Martzart [2010-11-09 10:52:57 +0000 UTC]

10X (:
I hadn't tried belows (although I know of them and was recommended using them before, I imagine the result will be pretty much the same, the extension tubes (8$) can used in various combinations to get the magnification you need (although it's not convenient as the bellow..

about the light and rail,
I shoot inside a light box and use books and a towel to stabilize the camera ([link] )
,but if you shoot outside I imaging a rail will be more necessary, and flash is a must anyway, especially when you add the extension tubes/bellows..

Thats a very cool setup,
I want to make a softbox and try some shots now

I know when you reverse a 50mm you set it to its widest appature before hand.
Do you need to set the 100mm at 2.8 when using it with the 50mm and tubes as well ? or do you set it narrower to try for a bit more dof?

The few shots I tried where without extension tubes.. I was hand holding the 50mm onto the end of my 100m.
A decent way to attatch them would be cool..
Might try duct tape, but I wonder if someone makes anything that would just let me thread them together.
