Description With Powergirl carrying a critically injured Captain Atom out of harms way, both Heroes are effectively unable to participate in the battle against the effects of The Primordial Annihilator Mageddon any further.

Not actually a fan fiction pairing picture this time since the image of Powergirl carrying the injured Captain Atom in her arms was inspired from their incredibly brief appearances in the epic Grant Morrison "World War III" JLA story in 2000.

This World War III story should not be confused with the Black Adam rampage story that had the same title, since this Morrison tale that concluded his run on the JLA is on a far more impressive scale and scope as an entity called 'Mageddon' has at last awakened from it's dawn of time imprisonment ( The threat it posed had been hinted at in an earlier Morrison JLA story, and had first been mentioned in 1998 in his 'Aztek' comic as a Dark God ).

'Mageddon', the Anti Sun, The Primordial Annihilator, the Warbringer. It brings about the obliteration of worlds by subtly influencing the minds of it's inhabitants, it sows despair, fans hatred and incites violence as it causes the worst aspects of sentient beings to rise to the surface to sap hope and bring about War on a global scale ( That it is ultimately DC's 'S' shielded champion of Hope who stops it -with help from all of humanity inspired by his example- is appropriate ).

The heroes of DC were tasked with trying to prevent what they could while the main JLA tried to find a way to stop Mageddon. Captain Atom and Powergirl only feature briefly ( about 2 panels in a story of hundreds ), the injured Captain in her arms with a shred of her cape wrapped around his face as Powergirl explains to Green Lantern that he took a sidewinder missile to the face that shattered his jaw and fractured his skull ( a bit odd and unlikely given he's taken far worse than that, like being punched by people with Superman level strength, but hey I'll accept random chance ) while Cap himself tries to tell Green Lantern and the JLA to finish things.

It really is a blink and miss moment, but both characters seemed to be fighting obscurity at the time so it was nice to see them.

Even though this story only occurred in the pages of JLA instead of being a full blown 'Event Story', i wish it had been just to see the effects of Mageddons psionic abilities on DC's heroes and characters in greater focus ( they were largely unaffected for the sake of the story when really it should have been gnawing at their resolve ).

PeeGee makes an impressive "Angel of Mercy". Β Kind of reminds me of the First World War posters for nurses:

Thanks I think the Grant Morrison run ( along with the writers that followed and guest wrote ) with Justice League is worth having a look at.

I mentioned it in the description above, in the story Powergirl explains that he was hit in the face by a missile, breaking his jaw and fracturing his skull.

Captain Atom is pure energy, right?

Yes and no. Originally under the metallic shell he was still a man and was able to instantly change between flesh or metal, this had slowly altered to him being an energy being who still feels he is a man under the metal shell but was concerned that he was losing his humanity ( although he could still assume a more human form ).

Ultimately just how physically human he is or can be under the shell varies from writer to writer. ( I tried to give my own explanation on page 18 of my Justice League fan story )

Yeah, I remember this one. Superman defeated him by absorbing Maggedon's full power.
