Description Ok so here's the Samurai piece I have been referring to for anyone who doesn't know the piece.

I had worked this crooked little line of teaching myself to draw online starting in 2004. As I improved the stuff got more and more complex and in early 2006 I decided I wanted to do something more serious and maybe a little more illustrative for lack of a better word. The African piece was really the jumping off point for all that.

I followed it up with this. At the time this was probably one of the hardest things I had ever drawn or inked.

(Ironically my favorite part ended up being the two white silhouettes of guards down towards the bottom...)

anyway there it is...and now I don't feel stupid talking about it for people who have never seen it.

(below is a reply from the African thread but it really explains why I posted these two older drawings)

...................................

""well again it's because of the line of thought I was working through at the time.

This piece(The African drawing) in many ways was an accident. I didn't know I was going to draw this 2 days before I did it. It just sort of happened.

Then the Samurai piece was to test myself with something harder in this exact style.

And the Blade Runner piece was basically a test I think to destroy myself and push all this as far as I thought it could go....

In all seriousness. I felt like I had some unfinished business and that's why I am doing that Blade Runner piece now.

as random as everything I seem to do is. I actually do have a reason I work the way I do. I know my goals and because I am self taught I basically teach myself something and then test the parameters of what I have learned.

The Blade Runner piece was my 'finals' for this style at the time... Unfortunately there was such a HUGE gap between all these pieces it's even harder to do now than it would have been back then.

:/

So it's like the past is coming right back around...and it's July 2006 all over and I am working on the end of this little pen and ink experiment.""
....................................

It's like closing that chapter finally. I just didn't feel like I could let this one go....so once Blade Runner is done I can feel like I did that exercise, slayed that past demon, and I can move on to my new work and ideas knowing I didn't walk away with unfinished business.

Plus I think the Blade Runner piece could be pretty cool...as long as I don't f*ck up.

One of my all-time favorite movies. I don't even know how you did this -- seriously amazing! Since you're into samurai, check out my comic book project: goo.gl/EwR1JD

By far your most superior piece.  Well done, commercially "slick" if I may be so bold.  Could have easily been a poster for the movie...
Reminds me of David Struzan's work.  www.drewstruzan.com/

Very well done!
The details are very well done. You've a great talent

The Samurai in the middle is inspired by Takamori Saigo (or called Katsumoto in a certain movie ^^), the Samurai to the right might be inspired by Takeda Shingen, and the mounted Samurai from the same movie as Takamori Saigo.
But I don't know where the inspiration about the Kyudo-ka came from *thinks hard* Is it from a movie as well?

Hi!

I can understand why you favourite part is the white silhouette ; they simply jump up from the draw! Like the black silhouette of the man on the horse.
Anyway, you works are really interesting. You really put a lot of effort in them!
I'm overall amazed by the huge amount of details, like in the other piece of yours.

I've only a question: you did these works with pen and ink, didn't you? I'm curious to know!

I posted a longer reply. It's better for a journal post so I am going to save it.

Just work up to something like this. That's what I did. I wasn't doing stuff exactly like this as a kid. I would try a few times a year. It's an evolution.

Maybe do one drawing like this and see how it goes. I guarantee you'll learn something.

ricH.

now THAT is an intimidating challenge! I am sure i will fall flat on my face, but the LEARNING!!!! I can't wait, yet I must...I just completed a Glamourpuss attempt (Dave Sim's photorealism style, if you haven't seen it, Dave is basically transforming himself into Alex Raymond, one comic at a time! ) and my hand is worn out for the night...I also am out of time, and cannot read the journal entry, but I will respond to it soon enough
