First things first, happy new year! Trust it was awesome? Anyway, todays picture is me living up to a small promise made you kind people of DeviantArt.

This is Samus Aran, from the Metroid series. I must admit I haven't played a single Metroid game, they don't really appeal to me - but I do like Samus as a character. Mostly because of the original game's reveal that Samus is female only at the very end of the game.

I guess I know Samus best from the Super Smash Bros series. I think it shows here, as it's a combination of Power-suit Samus and Zero-suit (no armour) Samus. I wanted to do something that showed the best of both worlds, so the armour is breaking/disintergrating away to reveal her true self.

I hope it's to the Metroid fan's tastes, it's certainly not my usual thing to draw robot-like figures, so that's why I kept it to a minimum

Adding in with everyone else's comments, I can't tell you how happy it makes me to see people take Samus seriously, she goes through alot of shit! And just every female character you draw dude seriously thank you for seeing them as more than just hotties.

Now to my main comment, going through your gallery I have nothing but good things to say about how you really choose to portray these characters, mainly their features, like these people aren't just a nose some color and blue eyes I can't stand when there's nothing else to them! I was trying to find some costume references for my own Gerudo portrait when I came across your image and I've gotta say I've never thought the Gerudos to be middle eastern but when you pointed it out it was all so obvious where I should go from there.
And I've always believed Samus would/should have strong Germanic features and to see this picture finally just

POINT IS, I love the way you bring some of these characters to life, good job dude

Thank you so much for writing such a nice comment! The thing that pleases me the most is that you noticed that I intentionally don't draw pin-up girls... I find there's a lot more to the characters than just curves, so it's nice to try and show that.

Anyway, thank you taking the time to write such a nice message - it made my day

Veddy interestink. Seriously, I love how you gave her muscular abs, a reasonably-sized bust, and a far more serious facial expression than a lot of people do. It's far more true to the character. Yet your description says you've never played a single Metroid game. Veddy interestink.

Yup, can't deny that I have. The games never really appealed to me much, but I promised this to the people of DA. I also like Samus as a character. I think I just like strong female leads in games!

Oh yes, costume merger! Very nicely executed, keeping her strength intact and in touch with her femininity, now that she's allowed it. The backlight gives her an almost angelic aura of saviour, which was a nice touch. Overall, lovely job <3

Thanks for the feedback - would you be able to expand on what's wrong with her neck? Personally I think it's right, but it might be how the light comes over, making it look longer than it is!

Any help would be very much appreciated!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TimotesH In reply to 2dforever [2011-02-06 21:12:11 +0000 UTC]

Mmmh sorry about the "big", it is not so much problematic, but for me the neck is a too long if you look the distance between the clavicle and here face, it's longer than her face ... and it is also too much on the right side ... if you check the middle of the torso, it's vertically aligned with the side of the neck whereas her pose is almost frontal ... it's not forced to be aligned, it's just too much on the side for me ... (or she is singing "what is love" haha )

But don't worry the overall pic is cool, and that's only my point of view ^^ maybe you don't agree

(and in you are right, the light accentuate the disproportion, so that's why it my eye so much ^^)

If you don't think so tell me, maybe i'm wrong

burkeonthesly [2011-01-24 21:24:05 +0000 UTC]

The position of her legs looks a little awkward, but the exploded-view armor and actually muscular upper body are both good points. As a bonus, her expression conveys an air of competence and determination in keeping with her character.

2dforever In reply to burkeonthesly [2011-01-27 12:43:13 +0000 UTC]

Thanks - I felt it was important that Samus looked like she's a bit tough, not just the usual doll-face you see with other fan arts..

As for her legs, I can see your point. I think it's because of the way her back leg hides behind the other... I may correct that later, thanks

burkeonthesly In reply to 2dforever [2011-01-28 20:33:50 +0000 UTC]

It kind of looks like the front leg is bending forward and in mid-shin.

I quite agree, Samus is a character with a great deal of history and depth, and that really ought to be conveyed in her expression. I think you've done so, and applaud you.

This is a very nice piece in tribute to the world of Metroid and of course Samus Aran herself with your rendition of herself here breaking out of her power suit. The idea is very exquiste and powerful in how you've presented her with energy, but how you've portrayed the concept of herself breaking out of the suit as though a symbol of her sheading her old skin for a new sleek coat. The way you've presented the armour breaking off as fragments and how they disintegrate is certainly a nice feature and greatly adds to the energy of the piece of the old becoming the new. The zero suit has really been appraoched as well and the attentions to detail and lighting that ripples off the sleek smooth build of the suit is one feature that makes it work so well, yet it might have been an idea to look into make it feel more latex/vinyl or perhaps has a glossed textured since it feels just a little stiff and restricted. It might be due the colours and the mild warmth but it does stop it from being strong never the less.

Another small area to bring out is the appearance of the face as well since she seems too male or butch than a charming beauty of a bounty hunter. It's not ruined, but it just seems too male than being that of a female appearance and to think a little more about the face next time and reflecting the mood of the character would be something to think about some more.

Thanks as always
The breaking up armour was inspired by (the brilliant) Akira as it goes - When I was imagining it prior to drawing it made me think of this scene: [link] (animated gif)

Just thought I'd share! As for the zero suit, I've never seen it as shiny latex myself, just something fairly skintight, more like lycra. I was also worried that if I did make it too shiny I'd end up getting predictable pervy comments!

Thanks for the final comment on reflecting the character too. I didn't want her to be predictably pretty or doll-like, so I went for a slightly more angry hard-up face here. But I think you have a point on reflecting the character. Thank you

Well we all have our own opinions of certain things. I do get what your saying, but in the end this is one style versus another of our own personal styles. The face does still look too rigid and manly to me, might just be how in all games she is presented in typical anime look than realistic.

It doesn't make sense for me for her to have torpedoes on her chest.

My first years Eve was really good thanks for asking , I got to spend the whole time with my family and that is what is importand now isnt it? Happy New Year to you as well even if belated

I am not a Metroid fan or a Nintendo fan for that matter but I must say that your idea to have her original armor breaking apart from her to reveal her other suit was really brilliant , I also liked the colour you used but I think (and take that from someone who is not an artist for whatever this is worth) that you should ad a little more "yellow" to the hair, but otherwise it really blends with the background colour, was that what you tried to do?
Nice pcture overall and I will be more than happy to ad it to my favorites selection :claps:
