I use my blog as a personal and professional means. If someone wants to see what I do I mostly say, have a look at my blog. at least it's more pro than deviantart. If you keep your blog active and post something regularly, then people keep coming. It varies, but according to my blogger stats I have about 3000 visitors per month. don't know how many of them deliberately were looking for me , but i'm happy with it. the comment system on blogger doesn't really work. it's annoying, so people don't use it. deviantart, flickr or facebook are better for that. I use tumblr, twitter, blogger, facebook, deviantart and flickr. gasp ! it's a lot, but all have different advantages.
tumblr is easy and fast. big audience. downside: you can't really comment well and pictures disappear fast in the stream.
twitter is good. another audience, but big potential audience. a lot of important people on it. downside is that your info can get lost easily in the stream of info, but it's just another tool.
blogger is good to show your work and keep as a personal portfolio book to look back at. an archive. clean and simple.
facebook: one of my favorite tools. you can build up a good fanbase and really interact. it's very personal. I get a lot of commissions and jobs through facebook. even from professionals and companies. also, people really follow what I do and talk to me about it on the street ( hey I read on facebook that.. ). I'm really really happy with it. big disadvantage: the image quality sucks !
deviantart: the site is still ugly, but the comment system works really well. I love the vibe here. it's like one big family; I have met many deviant artists in real life that have now become professional artists. this website really helped me to grow like no other. there's less pressure here of failing because there's so many amateurs and starters here. more of a friendly art school vibe. artists unite ! and I love that. no other website has that. but it's not good to use this as a professional portfolio. blogger is better for that. or flickr
flickr: has a handy comment system. recently changed it's lay out and i'm not superhappy with that. the white background from the past was perfect. clean and simple. but there's a lot of professionals on it and it's good for a portfolio website
to conclude: definitely not bad to post your work on more websites. because they have different audiences. and it really helps to have your work out there as much as possible. you can be an amazing artist with amazing work ( and you are doing really good ! ), but if the right people don't see your work then growing will be slow. so, my advice, try as many people as possible to view your work. I'm constantly working on that. also outside of the internet

yeah, I invest a lot of time in self promotion, but it works. and I kind of have to if I want to stay around and make money with it.

haha, yeah, I'm afraid it's part of it. You never think about that as an artist, at least not me. But if you want to survive comfortabely, you have to think like a company, a brand. And I don't think that's wrong, you can do awesome things that way. I'm lucky I had marketing and economics in high school, that taught me some interesting things. But I still have to learn a lot and get better. Didn't know they had camps for it in Norway
o yeah, pinterest ! heard about it, but haven't used it yet. My girlfriend uses it, but for now it's a bit much to me to also do that. But we'll see. I LOVE old machtboxes. I have a book about that
