πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Amoxcalli In reply to leeevogue [2009-08-13 17:21:14 +0000 UTC]

Since the start really, not a clue how long that is though. About two months? Something like that.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

leeevogue In reply to Amoxcalli [2009-08-14 08:55:07 +0000 UTC]

Ohh. So DevCRIT's a lot younger than I thought. How does it feel giving out critiques?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Amoxcalli In reply to leeevogue [2009-08-14 18:21:06 +0000 UTC]

devCRIT isn't that old, no. But it'sactive!

Feels good, very good. It helps my own writing as well, when you rend to pieces someone else's work (in a civil manner of course. ). When you know you don't like something, it's sometimes a real puzzle to figure out why you don't like it. And that's useful to keep in mind when writing your own work.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

leeevogue In reply to Amoxcalli [2009-08-15 08:23:07 +0000 UTC]

I'm glad devCRIT accepted me as a critic. I've been criticizing all over DA on my own, I guess I was practicing for devCRIT.

Yes, figuring out things is hard. But what's more difficult for me is telling the truth in an ethical way. I'm afraid some people just couldn't take in the cold, hard truth.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Amoxcalli In reply to leeevogue [2009-08-15 17:45:45 +0000 UTC]

As far as I know, devCRIT accepts pretty much everyone. I may be wrong though, I don't really follow the whole process, to be honest.

Don't worry too much about the ethics. Psychology tells me that since we "work" for a "company", we inspire the feeling of a "brand" in others. Authority, if you like, which means they'll be more capable of taking the cold, hard truth than they would be from some stranger.

Interesting, isn't it?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

leeevogue In reply to Amoxcalli [2009-08-16 01:05:00 +0000 UTC]

Why do they ask for our age anyway?

Yes, quite interesting. I'd like to get a hold of that authority, in a good way of course. I haven't given any critiques for devCRIT until now. Is it okay if I still give out critiques to others if they've asked me personally? Or should advertise devCRIT?

Two of the deviations devCRIT asked me to critique contains mature content and so I refused to do it. I'm a bit sensitive about disturbing proses such as those. And the other one's quite short and there's a few to critique. I assume some people think the shorter the critique, the lesser the quality.

Oh by the way, sorry if I'm so talkative and I always send you long comments. I'm just used to talking. And if I disturb you in any way, just tell me. Okay?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Amoxcalli In reply to leeevogue [2009-08-16 18:38:11 +0000 UTC]

I suppose to not get kids aged 11 in devCRIT. It'd kinda make the believability factor a little too low.

You can still critique people who asked you personally, just don't do it "in the name of devCRIT". They'll be "unofficial", if you like. And yeah, go and advertise.

They might, yeah. No worries though.

It's okay.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

leeevogue In reply to Amoxcalli [2009-08-17 14:05:32 +0000 UTC]

Oh.
I was wondering, do staff members have the privilege to select deviations they want to critique? or do the founder and co-leader just assign deviations to the critics?

Not that I'm choosy, but I'm much more comfortable criticizing a poem rather than a prose. I have a wider background on poetry than on proses. I mean, I really don't want to let go of the proses but I believe I can't give the writers what they really need.

I'm starting to think I'm really annoying. Oh why can't I just stop talking for once?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Amoxcalli In reply to leeevogue [2009-08-17 14:30:28 +0000 UTC]

Nah, we don't have that privilege. Well, we might, I have never really asked. I've refused two works for critique, one because it was waaaaaay too long for me to critique (as in, a good 20 A4 pages), and the other because it felt incredibly Twilight, but wasn't actually that bad. My deep hate for that sort of fiction would've really be unjust and unavoidable for that piece.

And yeah, I myself am at home more with prose, so I mentioned I preferred prose. I occasionally get poetry, but it's mostly prose. I think they'll consider that when you ask.

Honestly, it's okay, not annoying. Ask any questions you may have.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

leeevogue In reply to Amoxcalli [2009-08-17 14:56:38 +0000 UTC]

Wow. Whoever accepts to criticize that is mad. Nothing's worse than Twilight. I can't believe I wasted hours of my precious time reading the whole saga. You should do a critique on Twilight, maybe Meyer will thank you.

I never thought of mentioning which I preferred more. I've never really considered poetry and prose in different categories. I've just started to realize differences between them. But one thing's for sure, both are really challenging things to criticize.

I'm not usually like this. Okay, I am after all. It's just that everybody seems so busy these days. And I'm not used to not talking to anyone anyway.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Amoxcalli In reply to leeevogue [2009-08-17 15:09:46 +0000 UTC]

I'd attempt to commit suicide before finishing the Twilight "saga" (read: inflated teen romance). Besides, I don't know if Meyer will be able to take such a harsh critique.

Oh yes, they're VERY different. With Poetry, I tend to watch the following things: Flow, Vocabulary, Imagery and Execution of Theme. With Prose, I find Plot, (Sur)realism, Characters, Execution of Theme and Style far more important. They're two very different disciplines and often great poets are average prose writers at best. It's less evident the other way around, but still not a guarantee. And yes, giving critique is always challenging.
