I was using an object of blue crackled glass on a white fabric background and a (painfully) bright patch of sunlight. By tilting the glass (sphere shape) the sunlight reflected interesting patterns of light and shadow, then I just picked some nice angles close up. With the setting on the digital camera I could select the brightest area and it would automatically adjust contrast levels. (hope that elaborates for you)
