I've tried knoppix and mandrake and fedora for a while. My problem is really just that I can't find a good guide that tells me all the commands I need/want to know.

Nothing in particular, it's just that I need to learn how t ouse Linux as well as I can manipulate windows. I can learn all the visual GUI'd stuff, that's no problem. I just need to learn how to do a a lot of things; such as to become proficient with the terminal and all the way to, say, configuring and recompiling the kernel. I know how to program (althought not in C or C++, so configuring the kernel is probably off in the long run) and I'm not a novice, I just need a good guide to the internals and commands and such from a windows perspective.

see, i started with redhat, which was sooooo easy to install. I installed everything and then set at setting up web/mail/dns/irc servers. I did it one by one and took my time and google helped me I honestly think this is the best way to do it. I'm lucky in that i have a spare box, which is now my *nix box and this one is my windows box (i have another that i hack around on too). I don't think there's a definative guide (well not that i found) just google for each thing you're unsure of.

Oh yeah - one thing I miss terribly is winamp. I really can't do without the media library, something that xmms needs desperately. I've tried using wine with it, but graphics crap out on me and after a while of playing mp3s it just gives up and dies, hehe. The only two other apps I need would be Trillian and Photoshop. Both of the linux counterparts aren't that great in my opinio. I don't like GAIM at all, if only because of the clunky interface. And I'm not a big fan of GIMP, I just think photoshop is easier. So if I can get wine to work for these programs, or a suitable replacement, then I'd be happy to switch to linux (I'd really like to.) Thanks for any help

Ok, well, try kopete instead of GAIM, its far sexier (imho) and personally i like the way JuK deals with music and it is also sexy
The user interface for GIMP 1 is disgusting, gimp2 is _far_ nicer to use. There is no equivalent to photoshop, not at that level, BUT it will work under WINE because Disney (famously) use linux workstations running photoshop under wine.
