Hey there :3
I hope you don't mind me coming to youΒ directly, but I saw that you're from the UK like me, and I was wondering if I could ask you a question about cleaning fur? Specifically what you use to clean your fur...

I just bought two fox stoles, and one of themΒ arrived alreadyΒ cleaned and in super nice condition, however the other one is more fragile, and his fur is very waxy. I actually had to clean my hands after handling him :s
So I was wondering if there are any places in theΒ UK that you buy cleaning productsΒ from? (I've seen some cleaning spraysΒ from the US, but the shipping costs are way too expensive)

Any advice or recommendations would be appreciated :3
Anywho, have a lovely day <3

Wondering if you have, or might know, where I could get a tanned, soft-mountable rat pelt or two. I'm in the US, but willing to pay for shipping.

Hello,
I have tail rip problem and someone sent me your tutorial.
What kind of string do you use?
Does it have to be stretchable? Can I use yarn or a thin rope?

Just curious as to how things are on your end. I saw you read my note and blah. Sorry for all the offsite contacting from friends, I didn't know how often you came around.

Things are so far so good over here. I think scanning has stopped though D: but they told me that's normal.

I was just wondering, I know how busy you are. Thanks!

Reygerz [2012-09-07 21:30:26 +0000 UTC]

do they actually kill the animals or do they die naturally? ._.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

fossilizedmouse In reply to Reygerz [2012-09-10 17:50:47 +0000 UTC]

It depends really, sometimes they are killed for food, others for population control because they're killing peoples pets/live stock, other times they are found at the sides of roads or else where.

Awesome stuff!
I want to try soft mounting so badly, but it seems so complicated to do the face and I'm terrified to mess it up. D:

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

fossilizedmouse In reply to Copperavi [2012-07-05 20:16:23 +0000 UTC]

Thanks!
I think you should just go for it ^^ you can always practice on mice/rats easy until you feel confident enough, or you might even be able to find some cheap capes to practice with

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Copperavi In reply to fossilizedmouse [2012-07-06 16:09:31 +0000 UTC]

I will!
I was thinking of trying a weasel or ferret, since I've been wanting a mount of one anyway. c:
But mice/rats sound like a better idea to start with. But I don't really know where I could find pelts of those?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

FoxxyTheAnarchist In reply to Copperavi [2012-07-07 19:40:22 +0000 UTC]

You could purchase frozen feeder mice/rats from pet store, which you would ahev to skin yourself (lots of tutorials online )
You could use Borax o preserve them or ask fossil how to tan xD

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Copperavi In reply to FoxxyTheAnarchist [2012-07-07 23:55:08 +0000 UTC]

That's a good idea, I didn't think of that. (I should have, considering I have a pet snake. XD)
It would pretty great, as long as tanning isn't difficult or expensive haha.

i love your collection of pelts! wish my parents were more lenent with dead things lol though i have manged to persuade them to let me skin a mouse (lol big fail but at least i have the skull) and keep the wings of a starling XD

fossilizedmouse In reply to Howlecho [2012-07-02 19:37:28 +0000 UTC]

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Howlecho In reply to fossilizedmouse [2012-07-02 19:59:23 +0000 UTC]

hm it was only cause i could do it at my gran's,though i don't see why if i kept them at my grans that its a problem tbh lol

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

fossilizedmouse In reply to Howlecho [2012-07-04 17:14:48 +0000 UTC]

You just gotta start small and ease them into it it was the same for me, at first I wasn't allowed, but slowly I eased them into the idea, then I was allowed to skin things in my grandads shed and now I just do everything in my room

Sure, what's up?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

galitb In reply to fossilizedmouse [2012-06-16 15:08:32 +0000 UTC]

Basically I have this Red Fox pelt that I want to fix a little bit but I just started to collect taxidermy items so I lack of experience or knowlegde. Basically I want to hydrate him (his head and legs) but I'm not sure how old is his tan (not new for sure) still he is in rather good conditions. How can I recognized when a pelt can be hydrated?

Here some pictures of the pelt and leather: [link]

fossilizedmouse In reply to galitb [2012-06-16 15:11:09 +0000 UTC]

Sometimes you can't tell unless you test a small patch. I'd wet a small patch in an unnoticeable area leave to soak that small area for 20 mins and them tugg at either end, if the skin tears easily just stop because it won't hydrate well, if it stretches and doesn't tear then it will be fine

galitb In reply to fossilizedmouse [2012-06-16 15:17:03 +0000 UTC]

And what about a nose?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

fossilizedmouse In reply to galitb [2012-06-16 15:20:16 +0000 UTC]

If one part hydrates the rest should be fine

THANK YOU SO MUCH! One last question and done, how much time you leave it in the water?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

fossilizedmouse In reply to galitb [2012-06-16 15:25:58 +0000 UTC]

It can differ between pelts because of different tans, but usually I do so until the pelt has completely soaked up the water, roughly 20-30 minutes ^^
