So far I'm in the Death Match and cosplot. My friend hasn't heard back from anything either so I wouldn't worry about not hearing anything yet. He didn't apply for feud, but I did. I think they pair families up as similar cosplays (like pirates vs ninjas) or characters from the same show?

Well I think I may have heard back early since I know a lot of the people that run the events. I know they're still going through applications so don't give up hope! I applied with all of my Zelda costumes (Tetra, Link and Zelda) and Riza from FMA. Figured it is way too cold in March for Yoko to be in anything. What about you?

I finished my Maylene genderbend. Well, it's 99.95% done with a 95% confidence level. I was actually working a ton today to finish the one extra piece I've had my heart set on doing for a while. It's not going smoothly. I wanted it to be done the day before grad school classes commence, which is tomorrow! T-T Do you know which costume got you into Death Match? I'm gonna guess, Link.

Impressive to get so much done this early! I feel like I still have so much left to do for Winry, but I'm not sure I'm even going to have time to wear that costume during AB. Even though you start classes tomorrow there are still several weekends before AB. I'm sure you'll have time to work a little more and finish everything in time. I plan to get everything finalized the weekend before. For the DM I'm actually going to be Tetra. There is a bit of a surprise planned with my costume which I'm super excited for.

Oh, don't give me too much credit. I have been working on this since August. It takes me a long time to finish one costume. It's not even a really detailed of a costume or anything. But it is the first one that's legit over 2/3rds original. 100% is at least altered. I kinda saw Winry when I looked at your page just now. Flirty twirty. I'll hopefully finish my stuff. School is sooo hard thooo..I'm super excited because I finally got a Sheraton room this year.

I usually work on my costumes for months to a year as well. I don't usually do more than one costume per year, and making all original or altered pieces takes time. I can't wait to see the finished product. From what I can see of the wig its going to be awesome. Are you bringing any other costumes or just Maylene? I don't have any good pics of Winry yet. Those were just quickly thrown together for the cosplay event apps. I need to finish styling the wig first before I take better ones. I'm jealous you're in the Sheraton. We had a resv at the Marriot, but then the person whose name it was under decided not to go to AB and cancelled it. I had to scramble and get a room at the Boston Common Hotel instead. Walking outside in March is going to be a bummer.

I decided to throw down this year. Got on board all the way back in, like, December, or whenever first blocks became available. I'm doing Friday and Saturday nights tho. I got a convention hotel room for Connecticon, too. If your group decides to go to that, let me know. Even tho I know its pretty early, no one's clawing at my legs to get in like they have for AB.
Only Mays. I only really do one costume at a time, and then I never carry it again once i start a new cosplay. I just get sick of them after a while. That might change tho, because I miss Aaron. He died before his time (I broke the ahoge), and the wind messed up 1/2 of his shots. I should have been more careful with it. I'd like to make that wig again. I think I can do it better 2nd time around. Same with Maymay, She'll might have a "better" wig for Connecticon. For the record, in both cases, most of the things that I believe need improvement are admittedly pretty small details. They drive me nuts tho. I'm assuming yer Link had a wig, right? I love how the arched bangs frame your face. Stun-gun!

For AB we usually do Thurs -Sun, but this year to save money we're just doing Fri and Sat night.
I'll be going to Connecticon, too. We have a reservation at the Hampton Inn across the river. Are you in the Marriott attached to the con?
I used to just do one costume per con, but usually by the end of the con they were so beat up if I wanted to wear them again I had to fix up all the props. Some of my costumes also get very uncomfortable by the end of the weekend, so its great to switch it up and have a different list of complaints for the next day. Bringin back improved costumes for another con is really fun though. You should definitely bring back Aaron.
Link does have a wig which I've been tempted to redo. I'm glad to hear the bangs look good. I feel like they've been getting pretty frazzled over the years and rest that is hidden by the hat is a complete mess... But I need to branch out and do characters with more excited colors and hairstyles! Groose was the only opportunity I've had so far to really construct a crazy style.

I'm coming around to the notion of both keeping and bringing more costumes to conventions. I kinda turned Aaron's cosplay into my "informal dance" garb - green yoga headband (sometimes over a pink white girl wasted hat) now replaces the wig. That's like, my closest current second costume, I guess..
Last year, I wore the Aaron costume for a long time on Friday and got sick of it. I don't believe I even wore it on Saturday. In hindsight, I regret doing that. It happened tho, and it was still a fun weekend, but I feel like I missed things (although the whole "no rave" thing had a significant hand in that). A big part of the problem was the commute from hotel to Hynes: Definitely harder to wear the costume and deal with that. Good luck on that note. I decided that this year I was going to spend the big bucks on convention hotels, and hopefully have a better overall experience. Yes, I'm at the conjoining Marriott all Connecticon weekend. Get at me.

Yeah, its weird that there hasn't been a rave at AB since 2012. It has been good excuse to get out of the con for a bit though and get some drinks with friends or other attendees. Last year we ended up at California Pizza Kitchen getting margaritas that were actually way better than I expected considering it was just CPK.
I've been walking to the Hynes from nearby hotels since 2010 and it hasn't been too bad. AB hasn't been in March in a while though, so that is probably going to be unpleasantly cold. I've always been tempted to get a room at the Sheraton or Marriott to make changing costumes easier. They're just so much more expensive even with the con prices.

Wow! Sounds like you guys have so much fun. I did a cosplay bowling thing last year for Thursday night. It was different, but not everyone was in cosplay. I also didn't bowl very well. Where's California Pizza Kitchen? Sounds kinda like a chain, but I've never seen one. I'd totally be down if you guys were looking for people to get a drink with or w/e on Friday. I don't think I will be going in costume on Friday. Too much to do, in a way. Totally going to save it. Definitely hit me up if you're looking for hanging friends tho.

There is a California Pizza Kitchen inside the Pru mall. It is a chain, but that is the only location I know of. You're definitely welcome to join us if we go out again Friday or Saturday. If there is anyone else you hang out with at the con they're also welcome to join. We're not picky. I'm going to be in costume all three days with probably little time to change, but I don't mind going out in costume if there's no time to change. Cosplay bowling sounds like fun. Where did you do that? Jillians?

We bowled at the King's on Dalton Street. It's like 5 minutes or less from the Hynes. I don't remember anyone getting a drink though. I didn't feel like getting a drink at the time tho, I just shared pizza or something. Which of your costumes do you like best for going out in? I'd be timid to wander as a Yoko. I'll keep you guys in mind. I check DA all the time anyways, even at conventions. it would probably just be me. What's the name of the friend that you're going with?

Oh, that makes sense. I forgot about King's and how close it was. I don't go out in Yoko. I'm not even bringing her to AB since it would be way too cold. She's just a summer con costume that stays within the convention center and hotel. Any of my other costumes are usually fair game, though I'm more cautious if I have a lot of props with me. I'll be at the convention with Nick who is the one that cosplays as Simon/Groose/Hughes/HMS.

Does Winry go outside? How's that one coming along? Also, do you now how long it took to finish the Groose wig? It looks like the hairline was sculpted by whomever styled it. Never done that before, and I think it'll be necessary for my next wig project.

I think Winry is my most casual looking costume, so I'm fine wearing her around. For temperature Winry, Tetra, and Link all have the same amount of clothes so no matter what I'm going to be cold. I'm really close to finishing Winry. I just need to adjust her jacket and then make some props. The Groose wig was easier and faster to do than I expected. I did the pompadour and basic styling in about 1-2 hours not including time it took for glue to dry. Once that was all set I glued in a felt piece for the hair line and then glued hair over it to blend into the main wig. I used this tutorial www.deviantart.com/art/Wig-Hai…

Winry can can wear a big jacket tho. Props? Wrench, milk, something automail? What were you thinking?
That's the Ex-Shadow tutorial! I've seen that. He actually answered a question I messaged him on Fb. I like everyone at Arda Wigs. Especially Remie, Ex-Shadow and Rex Dart. ZOMG REX DART! I met her in Florida and then said hi to her at AB last year. I was soo shy. She's soo tall and really cool. It's my only cosplay fanboy thing, so far. I usually buy a wig head from them on Sunday before the dealer's room starts packing up. It's a legit deal, and after a year, there's usually a need for new styrofoam blood.

Her jacket just fits a bit more and is shorter, so I want to adjust it for that. For props it depends on what time I have. Probably a wrench and some other tools. She also carries a big case of tools and automail when traveling with Ed, or I might make a dummy automail arm or leg to wave around.
Ex-Shadow has amazing costumes and I found that tutorial (and most of the Arda wig tutorials) super helpful. I haven't met any of them or seen their costumes in person though. I just admire all their stuff on here. Thats a good idea to buy wigs heads on Sunday. I used to just get mine from a costume shop nearby that always had extras after Halloween, but they moved.

The masquerades I saw at AB and Connecticon were a lot different from the ones in Florida. I felt like soo many people that were judged in the craftsmanship contest didn't walk. I want to walk at Connecticon. if I'm like one of the only ones doing it tho, I might not.

I think CTcon is better about accepting different costumes to their events. I also just love their events since their a little more free-style than AB.
Both AB and CTcon do a quick parade of costumes for those that want to show off what they made on stage but don't want to be in a skit. Usually they have 20-30 people in the parade of walk ons. The main focus of their masquerade is the skits though. I've never seen any other masquerades so I'm not sure how other cons do it. I think most of the people that don't walk at the masquerade either have too bulky of a costume to walk up and down the stage stairs, or are busy with a different event and can't make it to the show. You should definitely walk at Connecticon though! I did when I competed in 2012 and it was a lot of fun. Apart from that I've always done a skit and so didn't need to walk.

There wasn't really the whole Masquerade thing in Florida, that's more of an Northeast gag based on my experience. They mostly had "costume contests" in Florida and they were genius! 1-2 hours long and once they began, it was entirely costume contest and they awarded the winners on stage for everyone to see. I always thought they were so much fun. That's why when I saw AB's masquerade, I was a bit disappointed that there wasn't more of the costume contest part. It wasn't a bigger a part of the show, or the true epicenter of the entire convention. I liked the skits, but in my mind, the costume contest is the ThunderDome. Without it, is still a bit like watching Nickelodeon Guts without "the Crag" at the end. It's not a big deal tho..

Its funny because I had the opposite reaction. When I saw videos of costume contests from other cons I didn't really understand how doing it all on-stage works. At AB and other Northeast cons you get privately judged in a small room where the judges can ask tons of questions about construction and get up close to see every aspect of your costume and compare to reference pictures. Then after that they make their decision which is announced at the masquerade after anyone who wants to goes on stage as a walk-on or skit. For those doing skits, the performance/plot/props etc are all part of your score, so if you have a good costume and an awesome performance you still have a chance to win an award next to those that have unbelievable costumes but no skit. I also think it draws in a larger audience of people that otherwise aren't too interested in the craftsmanship and want to just see their favorite characters in fun or dramatic skits. AB used to have a lot more walk-on slots and more time during the show dedicated to showing off fancy costumes, but it has been dwindled down over the years to keep the entire show shorter and faster paced. I think both ways have their pros, but I still just have trouble understanding how the on-stage judges at other cons really know what was involved in the costume without a long, personal judge/interview time.

As far as what I was aware of, they never did stage judging in the contests I saw. You went for private judging prior and then performed in the event later on. They just had so many people. Sometimes they'd let non-contestants walk, like just anyone from the audience could come up at the end. You didn't have to be judged, you could just do the stage part. Lots of Deadpool cosplayers. I was a little bit surprised at CTCon last year, because they were all like "Oh we have no spots left, we booked it all months ago!" I was like, "What?" I didn't realize they judged costumes for the skits.

That makes more sense. I do wish there was more time dedicated to costume craftsmanship and the contest was less structured, but AB and CTcon get so many applicants before the con that they can only schedule so many judging times before the masquerade. I also know AB is very big on keeping all events on time since their schedule is very full and they can't keep pushing other events back, especially events with industry guests. I'm still super excited for this year. Did you say if you were going to be in the masquerade or Hall cosplay contest at AB this year? I'm not but I doing something else super excited

I entered at BAMCon. There were like 5 people in it. I was fourth. I didn't expect to win with Aaron because he was maybe, only 33% fully made by me. I thought I should have done a little better because I was super psyched with the final look of the wig at the time, and I felt like I had a good performance. Oh well. in Death Match you're TEtra, right? What about the others? Link sounds good for chess. I don't know anything about cosplot.

Never heard of BAMcon. I feel like usually good wigs are huge deal for craftmanship, but if someone else sewed everything it can go either way. I've actually only ever won craftsmanship awards for the FMA and Skyward Sword costumes. FMA was at AB, and SS was at both CTcon and then AB. It really depends on the judges though. The MM group was the first time I ever competed for craftsmanship in novice and didn't place, but I placed in masters division for SS and I don't think the two sets of costumes are that drastically different in technique and quality. You'll have fun at CTcon though! The judges and coordinators are all very friendly and enthusiastic.
In Death Match I'm Tetra, and then I'll be Riza for chess since I was Link in chess last year. The cosplot is just a running plot that is played out over the course of the con during each of the major events. I'll be Link at the dating game which is probably a continuation from last year where Link married Ash at the dating game and then played as Ash's king for chess.

Yeah, I've been pretty involved in stuff at AB, but this will be my 10th one! I've been going since 2005 which is kind of scary. During undergrad was actually a bit easier than when I was trying to do stuff in high school, since by UG I had a car and an apartment of my own down the street from a costume and thrift shops. This year I decided to apply to so much since I didn't have time to really make any new costumes- winry being the only one. The dating game is fun. I haven't formally been in it as a contestant, but I know people who have and if you get picked you don't have to do anything with the person who picked you. The only real "prize" is you get front row seats at the masquerade if you decide to go with the person who picked you. I'm just hoping this year I'll still have time to relax a bit, meet people and enjoy the con. I love staying busy but don't want to be running around endlessly from place to place.
