Well, like I said, I'm not that good (my bro on the other hand is artistic genius) but in the past I have drawn horses and I've been practising tracing silouettes of people and things and adding details until I can completly freehand on my own. Is that considered cheating?

I don't draw, so I'm afraid I'm the wrong person to ask. Whatever helps you develop your skills is good for you, but I think using traced pictures for display pieces would be considered a type of "cheating". There is wiggle room. For example, you'll see a lot of people post things they've made with flash doll makers, which dA allows as long as you put them in your scraps folder. Art with a traced base might be appropriate for there, too. But I'd recommend checking around and seeing what other artists do first.
