I honestly can't believe this is happening. Quick, check the temperature in Hell!
Actually, I'm a little worried. What is Nintendo going to censor? I'm glad I've played the fan translation so I can compare the differences, because I can't believe Nintendo would leave the Magypsys alone for the North American market. (Avoid Googling that for spoilers, but in case you don't know, the Magypsys are in game described as being neither men nor women, but boast the visual short hand of both: pretty dresses, long flowing pink hair, and stark five o'clock shadows. IMHO, the Magypsys should be allowed to rock their original designs and people who are bothered by that deserve to feel disturbed... but you know...)

I'll go find a snowball and see how long it has a chance!
Oh geez, I did not think of that...on the one hand I know they know they game already has a devoted adult fanbase who loves it as it is and would not be happy with anti-LGBT censoring. On the other hand 'MURICA!!! I'm hoping the game's relative nicheness will save it. Like I can't see them letting this slip by unmolested in say a new Pokemon game but maybe it will here? We can hope. Or maybe Nintendo will just be cool about the whole thing and not censor it at all? If they do choose to censor, I'm betting they'll edit out the five o'clock shadow and refer to them exclusively as female.

TavalyaRa In reply to PurrElise [2016-02-06 17:10:47 +0000 UTC]
The original "Earthbound" has some interesting censorship. (For example, they try to pretend Everdread doesn't die after Fourside, despite not altering certain lines of dialogue that still heavily suggest he does and originally in Magicant Ness walked around naked rather than in his pajamas- I think that last change was probably a good call considering nudity doesn't symbolize purity in America like it does in Japan, so even though it probably was censorship, I feel like the same call could have been made for localization reasons.)
My bet is they'll make the Magypsys female, too, because that involves so much less sprite-editing, plus their house interiors look like boudoirs. They'll also probably change the Magypsys' mementos, which the item description in inventory specifically states is a "lipstick and razor".Β

PurrElise In reply to TavalyaRa [2016-02-06 17:43:06 +0000 UTC]
Yeah I agree about the naked Ness thing. That was a good call. Naked children do not mean innocence to your average Westerner, they mean prison time. The Everdred thing was dumb though. I didn't even notice. You pointing it out was news to me.
Ladies have razors though. Especially ladies like me that actually have five o'clock shadow of their own. Ahh the joys of polycystic ovaries. XD

That's pretty cool. I moan about it but my PCOS doesn't really bug me too much. I've lived with it so long it's a part of me, you know? Plus I don't have the symptoms too badly. I'd much rather have too much hair than my Mum's friend's daughter who also has the syndrome but is balding, poor girl.

Sometimes the grass is greener on your own lawn. I think I'd rather have to deal with excess on my face than losing what's on my head, but I know I'm pretty vain about my hair. But the huge appearance "issues" are only an issue because society is still working its head out of its butt. The pain, though, that's the thing that needs to be cured. I don't have PCOS, but I had another issue that made my periods extremely painful and I would lose days because of it. Pain is a problem and medical science ain't anywhere close to done until it can safely eliminate it.

Yeah, the pain is, well, a pain. Another symptom I had was blood clots and losing tissue. I used to think I'd had virgin miscarriages because tiny lumps of flesh were falling out of me every month. Then I started taking the pill and that stopped, thank God.

Okay. Notes it is. :>
Here's a better topic for public comments: do you own a Wii U? If Mother 3 actually does get a Western release, I'd be quite tempted to get one. I'm tempted anyway since all I have right now is a 3DS from the Nintendo...platforms? I'm such a gaming n00b. XD Anyway, I wanted to know if you own one and, if so, your opinion on it? People are always joking that they're a bad buy/had terrible sales/aren't worth owning etc. and I'm not sure how much of that is internet hyperbole and how much I should take seriously. I don't want to throw money away on a bad buy. oo
π: 0 β©: 1
TavalyaRa In reply to PurrElise [2016-02-11 03:33:59 +0000 UTC]
Yes, I own the Wii U and I recommend it if you do not already own a Wii. If you owned a Wii, then my answer would come with more qualifiers and you'd have to evaluate if upgrading is really the right choice for your needs. However, you don't have one, so getting the Wii U is pretty much getting a Wii as well since it has full backwards compatibility. Getting used to the interface can take a bit and at first the touch pad integration is disconcerting, but I adapted to it quickly and feel comfortable with it now. Keep in mind that you will want to get either an adapter to let you plug in Gamecube controllers (they don't plug in directly as they did with the Wii) or a Nintendo Pro Controller. The Pro Controller has an almost identical setup to a Gamecube controller, but needs to be plugged into a Wii mote to work.
Example of the adapter: www.amazon.com/Super-Smash-Gamβ¦
Example of the Pro Controller: www.amazon.com/Nintendo-Pro-Coβ¦
A much CHEAPER controller: www.amazon.com/PDP-Wired-Fightβ¦
This is because depending on what you're playing, the touch pad controller is probably far less than ideal. It was fine for playing an RPG like "Earthbound", but I cannot even imagine the hell it would be to play "Super Smash Bros" with it. I haven't that kind of skill.
Honestly, the Wii U is of questionable worth if you already own a Wii. We did and that put us on the fence for the Wii U, but then someone gave us one as a gift and we're really happy with it. I would probably be less thrilled had I bought it myself- but only because it doesn't feel like that much of a necessary upgrade from the Wii. Frankly, Brawl is better on the Wii than the Wii U, primarily because they took away so many of the stages. However, Wii U Brawl does have a much larger roster. I was ready to flip every goddamn table when they took Lucas out of the game for the Wii U, but they've since added him back through DLC, and I also like playing Rosalina. We're going to get Bayonetta as well and I'm looking forward to trying her out!
A Nintendo console is worthwhile for us because we really love playing Smash; the SO and I have probably gotten weeks, if not months, of play hours out of that single title. I can't wait to die and go to heaven so Saint Peter can tell me my total lifetime play duration and I can hang my head in shame. Also, you bet your ass I bought "Earthbound". Holy fuck, did I buy "Earthbound". I bought the shit out of "Earthbound". (But not "Earthbound Beginnings"/Mother 1, because I already tried playing it on emulator and OMG could I not get through it.) I'm not sure the Wii U itself really has such a vast library, but keep in mind the backwards compatibility: you will be able to play Wii discs as well. Also, a lot of titles that are last gen for the PlayStation and XBox are available for Wii U, although I haven't really been following news on how good these ports are since we've already played the ones we're interested in. (We had an XBox 360 that we replaced with a PS4 and our desktop PC works well as a gaming rig.)
Honestly, I'd say the number one question to ask yourself is are you certain there are enough titles that you want to play OR that there are one or two titles you know you'll be happy playing obsessively to get your money's worth out of it?

No problem! Make the decision that is right for you. It is a pretty heavy chunk of change up front. If you're only considering it for "Mother 3"... eeeeeh, you know I am over the moon for that game, but I can't in good conscience tell anyone to shell out $300+ just to not play that on emulator.
Oh holy shit, will I finally be able to do rhythm combos now?! That's a feature in the game that is near impossible to use on emulators! ("Earthbound" did play differently on the Virtual Console than on emulator- notably, the RNG seemed more active and "rare" events that I knew about but never experienced before happened, like rare enemies and the SWORD OF KINGS, OMG.)

It's not just Mother 3, there are other games I want to try. It just sweetens the deal. :> I really want to try Splatoon for a start. Not to mention all the old favourites like Zelda, Mario etc. that right now I play at my friends' houses. I have the money (ahh, the life of a free wheeling swinging single) so I'll give it some serious consideration. Thanks again.
π: 0 β©: 1
TavalyaRa In reply to PurrElise [2016-02-12 20:45:06 +0000 UTC]
You can get the Wii U pre-bundled with some games. I think Splatoon is one of them (Amazon comes up with a Splatoon + Brawl bundle). Ours had Mario Kart, complete random chance since we didn't pick it ourselves. Not sure we would have bought it, but we've gotten some enjoyment out of it. Apparently the Wii U is not backwards compatible with Gamecube discs like the Wii was. Don't know if that will affect your decision.

Don't know if this is true for you, but the Wii U is available for us on Amazon, probably other sites. You can probably find good info on its specs online, without having to bother with face-to-face asshattery.

PurrElise In reply to TavalyaRa [2016-02-13 16:27:52 +0000 UTC]
Yeah we can get it that way too. The problem is I'm such a n00b I don't understand a lot of what the product descriptions and reviewers are talking about. Then Google searches just lead to more confusion! They need to make special guidebooks for people like me who just want two things: 1) For it to work when you plug it in and 2) For the games I shove into it to run. Explaining everything in simple words. XD

and okay! i can drop you a note at some point. and that is super funny that i showed up when u started posting that fic like what perfect timing.

You're on the dragon now, you can't get off. *cackles* Actually, squee! I'm so glad you're enjoying it!
The story isn't actually based on HTTYD 2. I came up with the plot and started work on it before seeing the movie (although not before seeing movie posters- hello, older LEGAL Hiccup!) and it kind of... ignores everything. But the movie is definitely worth seeing and I highly recommend it! My fic is based on the first film and the TV show. (And here's where I explain that the show is called "Dreamworks Dragons" but each season has its own name, so you're more likely to find it as "Riders of Berk" or "Defenders of Berk"- thanks for making things unnecessarily confusing and cluttered, Dreamworks!) The show and movies dance around each other, not confirming or denying the other's canon, and many characters- Dagur included- appear only in the show and aren't mentioned in the movies at all. (Not sure how familiar you are with the show, let me know if you want an episode guide to the essential Dagur. "The Night and the Fury" is definitely my favorite episode- Hiccup and Dagur alone in the woods and Dagur just cannot keep his hands off Hiccup.)
i just got to the part where he is oogling dagur and fuck damn it i want to draw older dagur now okay.
...do eeeeettt.
I eagerly await your note!

i laughed so hard at that, and my roomie did too. no! i don't think i could get off if i tried! lmao!
but yes, i loved loved the story so far. like, everything about it, but it's really no wonder considering how much i have just ate up your other stories. this is so refreshing though, your writing. i miss how you tune into the little details that make everything seem so real, your writing is so sensual in a way. probably why it always inspires me to draw so much. it's like when you can feel a character. you picture them in his pristine light. and yes! a list would be great. i know some is on netflix, yeah? i am watching the second movie now. forty minutes in and so many feels! and YAS hiccup is so HANDSOME!
YES. oh oh so i saw his facial structure compared to norman reedus' too, what do you think of that? i think i am going to sketch versions of my own too but i thought it was a neat idea because in a side by side comparison, they really do. but id do a couple then, because norman reedus would be like... realistic older version anyway. and yes! but YAS i need to do the fanart of this story.

TavalyaRa In reply to RzSumisu [2014-11-09 21:10:03 +0000 UTC]
OMG, thank you! That's one of the most incredible and touching things anyone has said about my writing. More than anything, I'm glad that you find it inspiring!
Last time I checked, Netflix doesn't have the show (although it has "Gift the Night Fury" which doesn't fit the show continuity at all when you think about it), but there are other sources. So, Dagur's appearances...
- "Twinsanity" - Dagur's first and only S1 appearance. Establishes his character and past relationship with Hiccup- and it's interesting to note that Dagur doesn't seem to care about Hiccup at all for most of the episode. (It also shows that Stoick already disliked Dagur, even before Dagur started pulling shenanigans.)
- "The Night and the Fury"
- "View to a Skrill Parts 1 and 2"
- "The Flight Stuff"
- "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes"
- "Cast Out Parts 1 and 2"
IMHO, S1 is stronger than S2 (Dagur's appearances are great, but some of the filler episodes really fall flat) and I also like the episodes "Portrait of Hiccup as a Buff Young Man" and "When Lightning Strikes".
I looked up Norman Reedus on Wikipedia and quickly realized I'm one of the only people on the Internet who needs to do that- if I had told his name to my SO, he would have said "Oh, yeah, that's Daryl" right away, I'm sure! (I don't watch "The Walking Dead"; I can't handle zombies!) Yes, let's go with that!

you're very welcome! but yes, you are probably my favorite fanfiction writer, i don't think there's a contest when it comes to that.
and okay, i saved your list. i am planning on definitely going through and watching them all!
and alrighty, good advice. and it sucks that S2 isn't as strong as the first.
PROBABLY. i love the walking dead, excited about watching it tonight too! but yes, and i made my friend rose read your fanfic so we could perhaps role play the characters, i figured it would be a good way to introduce her to the pairing.

Not to say S2 isn't without shine, but when the twins are written poorly, they're unbearable and if you didn't already hate Snotlout, you will! (On the flip side, when the twins are written well, they're hysterical. Snotlout, however, is always Snotlout.)
If you do a public roleplay blog or tumblr, you have to link me! I need to see this.
