"On no subject are our ideas more warped and pitiable than on death... Let children walk with nature, let them see the beautiful blendings and communions of death and life, their joyous inseparable unity, as taught in woods and meadows, plains and mountains and streams of our blessed star, and they will learn that death is stingless indeed, and as beautiful as life, and that the grave has no victory, for it never fights. I barely frequent DE but I am shocked I haven't seen your collection sooner. I cannot wait to have the time, income, and space to really get my collection started beyond a few pieces I salvaged from ruination as a kid. Β I am in awe, I love it. Also thanks for the helpful links.

I'm curious what your stance on the Migratory Bird Act is in regards to non-endangered species, as I have seen a few birds that fall under it's protection in your collection.

Hey hey! I have used your bone cleaning tutorial (very helpful thanks!) But did have one question, I have a femur I am wanting to use as a handle, but want to seal/varnish it. Have you ever tried anything along these lines or heard of how people go about it?

I figured straight up wood varnish could do the trick and then just polish it up, but do not have any other pieces of bone available to try out on, and don't want to mess up my one good femur

I absolutely love your gallery, and have actually sketched a few things using some of your pelts as a reference, (nothing I've posted, sadly... Or I'd happily give you credit in the description.) I've even become quite interested in taxidermy, and how it works because of your work.

Thank you so much for doing what you do.

Q. Where do you get all the things in your collection?

A. I get them from a number of places including taxidermists, second-hand stores, colonial history events, but many of them are animals that were found as roadkill which I take home and preserve myself.

Q. Why do you collect these things?

A. I find them to be invaluable for study and reference, not just for art, but for learning more about the animal kingdom as well. They are also beautiful and allow me to get up close and personal with animals that I wouldn't be able to otherwise.

Both your questions were answered in the FAQ on the front page most of her pelts came from the side of the road, so not shot and killed *Just* for their fur, in fact most were killed by accident and none by her

I'd toss out those Robin Wings - possessing songbird wings is federally illegal and can land you in big trouble... the only "songbirds" you can possess are the Non-Natives like Rock Pigeon, European Starling & House Sparrows (to name a few).

Someone could see this & you will have people at your doors =/

Sorry new to this thing, I'm pretty computer stupid.

Just review your laws - it's funny but animals such as parrots & such are on CITES and you can get in trouble with them.

Songbirds are protected in most parts of the world, at least the higher world countries... View Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918, Great Britain is included in this too........ I didn't do too much research, but GB is included in there for protection & I have no idea how much trouble you can get.

I do this to help out others... someone once warned me about possessing bird parts & I wanted to pass on the favor as well. You may not get in trouble, but the laws are there, and ya don't wanna be that one person who does get in trouble...

Nukawin In reply to HereInSmallTownUSA [2011-04-10 08:55:19 +0000 UTC]

Yeah I'm not gonna have dead parrots around me. I have live parrots (pets) so my mum would go through me for a shortcut if I had dead parrot bits (she LOVES them)

Well. I found it roadkilled. And I am friendly with licensed taxidermists, they've said noting. So honestly, I'm as skeptic as fuck when it comes to a complete stranger telling me I may be in trouble.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

HereInSmallTownUSA In reply to Nukawin [2011-04-10 09:21:29 +0000 UTC]

Well I wish that was allowed here in the States, but even our roadill (stupid laptop ey) have laws on what you can & cannot collect (it is illegal most times & most people don't no that); you typically have to call the fish & game to call them to chec it out, give you a tag, etc. before you can remove it.

I thought you were in the States, since it seems a LOT of people are selling online stuff that is illegal (I have seen parrot feathers, songbirds, migratory birds such as geese & whatnot, as well as cats/dog fur - all illegal)... our federal laws are pretty hefty on charging you, hence why I worry for the sae (hope you can figure that one out) of others on getting stuc with $2000+ or jail time just for being curious. There are even idiots selling songbirds on the CITES list online & people are buying them...

Most my taxidermist friends just don't say much to "younger wanna-bes" anymore. From my experience, most taxidermists I run into do not no all of the laws.

To me, better to be safe than sorry. Complete stranger or not, as stated, just trying to inform others "just in case" I've seen some crazy things people in the USA try to sell that are illegal & they didn't even no...

Nukawin In reply to HereInSmallTownUSA [2011-04-10 09:25:19 +0000 UTC]

Unless something I have is dosmetic, I'd never ever sell any wildlife part outside the UK. I'm not that insane.

If I got it in the UK I'll sell it in the UK (unless I get export licenses)

Otherwise. Anything I import (coyotes, coons, etc) - EVERYTHING has to have a license or I won't buy it D;

I don't understand how I can get in trouble for something I found roadkilled but, okay, I'm gonna look into that. :/

Thanks for looking out for me anyway. And I agree with people on here selling things illegally. I'm just waiting for them to get taken down for illegal trading.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

HereInSmallTownUSA In reply to Nukawin [2011-04-10 09:45:35 +0000 UTC]

Anywho, I apologize for any misconception - no idea how to wor this site (yet, again) , it's been years & though not much has changed (who nos, maybe I'm getting old & blind & unable to learn anything new).

The reason why roadill here is illegal in some places (as well as parrots) is because just because someone says "Oh... I found it dead... I swear!" does not mean they actually did... there are apparently idiots who go shooting stuff & lie about it :/ Or I guess someone "runs over it" on "accident" so they can pic it up.

Our laws here are so contradicting that you sort of have to bring papers together to go over each just to mae sure (in more complicating words) - example:
1) You can possess a ____bird
2) But it cannot be alive
3) But it cannot be dead
4) It cannot be in pieces

It's not that bad, but when I go over laws, it does get confusing.

You cannot sell any cat or dog fur here, found, your own animal, etc. Is it legal there for you guys (just curious). Quite a few taxi's here don't no that.

Anyways, this is what made my ears pric up:
[link]

I worry, because I wor(c) with/along some ornithologists & they get REALLY uptight over things. Any bird piece, parts, etc. they'll eat you alive! It's been beaten in me for awhile now (... ha ha?) so apologies for them getting the best of me.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Nukawin In reply to HereInSmallTownUSA [2011-04-10 09:57:28 +0000 UTC]

I get confused with laws too (I have a friend who explains it to me but sometimes I'm skeptic of her too, its really nothing personal, I've had a terrible time with trust so I've learned to not trust anyone )

Over here you need to prove the animal you have was roadkilled (photos, name of road, date/time collected and record the damages on the carcass) - This is especially important with protected species, like badgers. Its illegal to even sneeze on a badger, they're that heavily protected. I had to contact several charaties regarding owning a badger skull. They said I can provided I can prove its roadkilled (everything above) and if I have a taxidermy license. I kept the emails from the charaties incase I need them in future.

I'd never trade cat/dog fur, even if it is legal. I have, admitibly, traded cat skulls, from roadkilled, feral cats, but I'll never work with cat/dog fur.

I book-marked the link so I can check it out when I have a chance.

Its okay, and its perfectly understandable. I've seen people here trading badger parts (UK) and I do worry. I have even seen them importing furs from USA, and I wonder if they even have permits to import those.. Permits aren't cheap, but they'll protect you from laws, so whats a few extra £££ ($$$) to a period of time in Jail? :/
