hey man, random high thought:
syd barrett would have been great with the early Velvet Underground.

...in some aspects.
They both had a heavy blues influence, but in actuality, VU hated the hippie counterculture, & syd was way into psychedelic music, a big tie-up w/ hippies.
Lou & Syd were two totally different writers, & syd didn't even write most of Floyd's music. He wrote the music to "see Emily Play" & whatnot, but hated long psychedelic interludes, which were quite frequent in Piper. In an interview he stated that he didn't connect as intensely as he wished w/ the other members of Floyd. He was an art student & they architechure.
But, his voice would be beautiful w/ VU's music, but they were in two totally different worlds.
Drugs fuck w/ your mind, man. haha

this is just a hypothetical situation.
i've been really hooked on syd lately, and i was listening to No Man's Land and the guitar work there sounds pretty VU.
syd's guitar playing also experimented with dissonance and feedback, the same as VU.
and about the hippie vs hip culture ideals, they dont have to get along, they just have to work together haha.
now the great, introspective question: who do you prefer?
Lou or Syd?

I honestly don't care for Syd's solo electrical songs, such as No Man's Land. I love his songs like dark Globe, Here I Go, Terrapin, If It's In You, Late Night, Love Song, Golden Hair (lyrics are a poem by James Joyce), Rats, etc.
I'd have to go w/ syd, even though VU is my favorite band. I perfer VU as a whole. Once cale left, you could tell. Not as much artistic value. If Cale didn't drop out, Loaded would of NEVER happened, I think. I don't think he'd allow it.
Have you ever heard their song "candy Says"? Beautiful song, but Reed doesn't even sing it. It sounds dead like him, but Doug Yule sang it. They sound so fucking alike it's crazy.

i love syd's playing style, he experimented with the guitar. acoustic or electric, he made awesome music.
i prefer his first solo album.
and yeah, VU worked well as a band. Cale gave his experimental tendencies. Reed his songwriting and great rhythm guitar playing. Tucker her signature drumming. Morrison is a good guitarist.
i love the early VU, after Cale left it wasn't the same. they made good music, true, but it just wasn't VU.
i choose syd obviously, lou had his moment of brilliance, but syd was just amazing in so many ways (i sound like a fucking groupie haha).

Syd was actaully the first person to play slide guitar w/ a zippo lighter, something many people now do.
