It's ok to reply late everyone gets busy sometime.
Can I ask you a personal question? You don't have to answer if you're not comfortable with it. I see that on your page you're both drawn to art and science. That's what I'm like and in a year's time I've got to pick my stream for high school and I don't know if I should go with science or art. Do you have any tips on choosing?
Good luck with game designing!

EmLosin In reply to Chainisa [2014-09-25 12:50:47 +0000 UTC]
No problem, I was in a similar position when choosing my subjects for school. My teachers wouldn't let me choose physics, chemistry and biology as well as art classes and media so I had to choose between my two favourite topics.
I chose art, mostly because I was better at it and knew I'd finish year 12 with a high mark to get into higher education (my chosen courses had no prerequisites).
in the end it's up to you but I'd go with what you're better at. Even if you can't do both at school you can still if you choose science, do art at home. Make sure to join an art group, many people lack the focus and motivation to be completely on their own. If you can take zoology and are interested in it, teachers love it when you illustrate the animals you are learning about.
if you choose art it will be much harder to integrate science into it. A couple of things people who love science can't stand about art is the lack of structure and logic. Ways to combat that is to treat art as a science experiment; choose a topic (eg. How to create a superhero), research it and of course design your own. Art is closer to science than a lot of people think. If you learn things like colour theory and symbolism and use it in your work it will provoke a certain emotion in the viewer, usually the emotion you were trying to evoke.
Careers that include both art and science (usually just psychology) are advertising, graphic design, and most design careers.
I chose game design because it includes the logic and structure missing from art, plenty of opportunities to research and create as well as involving science whenever and however I like.
It really comes down to where you want to go in life, it's hard to choose a career at such a young age but I recommend going with the thing that's you've never gotten bored of, whichever one has stuck with you the longest. Remember you have you're whole life ahead of you. Nothing's stopping you from becoming a full time marine biologist that paints and exhibits as a hobby, or becoming an artist that travels the world and taking up a new career in science when it suits you.
It's a tough choice but at the end of the day it's completely up to what you feel would make you happiest. Don't let anyone push you into anything because its your life and you deserve to live it how you choose
Good luck!

Thank you so much for the detailed advice! 👍: 0 ⏩: 1
I've been thinking of psychology from a science perspective but never an art perspective so that's actually interesting to hear. I like the idea of art but I can't think of positioning myself where I have to paint commissions. Also the art world seems pretentious but maybe that's just me. "^^ Have you heard of KmyeChan ? She's a scientist that does amazing art so I read her post on being a scientist that made me question more about what I want to do in life. Designing is another thing that my parents have suggested, which sounds cool too! Also the thing about colour theory is something I wanna search up because colour symbolism is something I like to look into for English.
Again thank you Emma. Can I call you that?

EmLosin In reply to Chainisa [2014-09-28 14:27:37 +0000 UTC]
No problem I was in a very similar situation, so I know where you're coming from.
The main reason I left the art world is because it is so pretentious. There are some great artists out there but many are down right rude to new artist and unnecessarily critical of their work. The best (well, the only) way in is to go to a good art school and make some contacts. Unfortunately in the art world, contacts beat talent.
Yes, I have seen a fair bit of KmyeChan's work, she's a great artist! It's nice to see someone who has really combined science and art in their lives.
I personally love symbolism in all forms of art (I include English in that, too). It ties in to psychology and is interesting how it differs from culture to culture and even between generations. Colour theory is a great thing to know for any artist or designer, it's also a very interesting subject.
Haha, that's fine, write as much as you like
Yes, of course you can call me Emma, it is my name
What sort of sciences are you leaning towards?

Chainisa In reply to EmLosin [2014-09-29 14:15:15 +0000 UTC]
Hello Emma!
Contacts? Oh... I've never thought of that but it seems like a difficult and competitive thing to do. I don't think I'll take a Fine Arts course or anything like that in college that's way too much pressure on me. Maybe Illustration if I ever want to take an art route.
As for sciences I'm leaning towards Biology and perhaps Chemistry. Physics is not really my thing. I like pyschology especially because I like knowing how my mind works and observing other people. My English teacher loves symbolism and it has rubbed on me. I like including symbolic meanings within my art too.
I searched up colour theory and it seems pretty interesting.
What sciences do you like? I'm guessing physics since that goes with game designing. Also do you like reading?

Hi Ni,
it is very competitive when if you say and do all the right things. A Fine Arts course (depending on the curriculum) usually teaches a lot of great skills but does not do much for you in the way of employability, unfortunately. Also, because art is considered "easy" (by people who have probably never picked up a paint brush in their lives), it generally requires and astronomical amount if work which most people simply do not have the time for. If there is a more practical art course that enourperates the digital side of things it is much easier to find a job that requires such skills. Illustration sounds great! Writers will always require illustrators. It's a lot more practical than Fine Arts.
Chemistry and biology sound great! I took chemistry for a while but carried on with biology much longer and really enjoyed. I also took zoology. Psychology is also a very interesting subject. Very practical and not as hard as biology and chemistry.
I only took physics for a short while but it was a lot of fun, it did involve a lot of maths, though.
Zoology, Biology and Psychology were my favourite subjects to study, at some point I would love to study Volcanology and possibly Astronomy.
Physics is engrained in video game design. Things like a basic understand of anatomy, physics and biology are very useful in character design and animation (deciding how a character moves due to its muscle and bone placement). Of course there are a lot of sciences involved in vidio game design to make a virtual fantasy would seem believable.
Psycology is also important as each it is necessary to make a game enjoyable and interesting, also to give it a good story to capture the player.
I do love reading, due to my studies I haven't had much free time to read, unfortunately. What sorts of books do you like?

Hello Emma!
I'm currently re-reading the Heroes of Olympus series by Rick Riordan to reconnect with characters so I can read the final book of the series that just came out. I mostly like to read sci-fi/fantasy but anything that looks like a good read I will pick up. The most recent good read (aside from the series) is Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Sáenz. I think it's beautifully written because Ari's feeling are so bare when he narrates it but in real life he keeps it within himself. Also the plot centers around two teenage Mexican boys instead of two white guys going on an adventure type of thing. It isn't cliche. I'm gonna stop there or else I'll keep ranting and ranting about the book. ><
My relationship to practical art is well... rocky. Sometimes I'm so full of passion about it and other times I don't feel so passionate about it, which is why I need science to balance this stuff out. I guess the thing I fear about taking an art route is employability, which is one of my parent's concern as well. I guess a creative career is what I'm looking for.
Zoology, biology, psychology, physics, volcanology and astronomy! Oh my goodness that's a whole lot of a science! How do you have time to learn all about these subjects? Astronomy sounds really interesting though, observing the stars at night and learning about planets. My mom used to love astronomy when she was younger (I guess I got the love of science from her). We've a telescope but we have yet to complete building it. Volcanology reminds me of the Journey to the Center of the Earth.
What other interests do you have beside science and reading?

Hi Ni,
its always good to reread things, I find myself doing that often. Sounds like an interesting series! I also love scifi and fantasy but anything that is well written with a good storyline is good enough for me.
I think most artists have a bit of a love hate relationship with art. Sometimes I'm full of ideas and other times I just can't think of a single thing. I usually write down and do super quick sketches of my ideas which helps to even out the times when I'm uninspired to the times I am. That way when I have no ideas I can flip through my sketchbooks and finish something that I thought of earlier. It's great to keep track of ideas and themes, too. Plus when applying for art and design courses they love seeing all your quick sketches and the ways you work things out.
i won't lie, employability in any creative field is tough but visual art is probably the toughest. It's because there is no way you can work as an actual artist in the workforce (whereas designers, dancers, actors, writers ect can). Most artists feel too confined doing commissions and concept art as it allows no freedom, and art is all about freedom of expression. When the creativity and expression of art is taken away from it, most people just can't deal with it. Designers have it easier as they are all about creativity, within the confined of the employer, but much more than an artist.
I was lucky enough to attend a private school that offered subjects such as volcanology and astronomy, when I moved to a public school I took zoology, biology and psychology. I kept up volcanology in my spare time and in geology.
I like to read about these subjects a lot an am always looking out for articles on new things that have been discovered.
I'd love to have a telescope! That sounds wonderful.
i used to have a lot of outdoorsy hobbies like hiking, sailing, canoeing, caving, kayaking and things like that but unfortunately I've had to stop all that. Now art is my main hobby, as are video games, music and breeding/showing long haired guinea pigs.
Every time my mum complains about them I remind her that there are worse things than breeding guinea pigs that a young person could be doing, haha. She secretly loves them though and brings them treats whenever she comes over.
What are some of your other hobbies?

Hello Emma!
I'm very sorry for the extremely late reply. I'm not great at replying on time or keeping up. Has your Game Design Course begun yet? I hope it goes well and that you will completely love it.
I just wanted to say thank you for all advice and insight you've given me, despite how old this conversation is. I had to choose my courses for Grade 11 and 12 recently and looking back on what you said to me about employability, creativity and balancing arts and sciences really helped me decide my courses for next year. I mean no joke, every time I had to choose between Maths and Arts Higher I just kept thinking about having contacts to be successful in the art world, passion and all that. For my art exam I took your advice on structuring art as a science experiment that made things much, much easier. I finally decided that I wanted to take the science route, with art as a hobby. I would hope that I can find something that balances those two in the future but for now science is the way to go.
Your words were really encouraging and made me hopeful for the future. I just really appreciated it!!!
