Description **EDIT** Another very old drawing that's been tweaked. Because contrast is always better, right?

This picture was an experiment with detail. Done entirely with #2 pencil and mechanical pencil. Age 16.

^_^ Thank you! I need to do another one of these....I've always enjoyed the fine detail and shading in pencil pieces.... Appreciate all the comments! You're always nice and specific, too!

personally, i find adding the key details to be the best part of pencil drawing such small strokes can make such a difference!
youre welcomee

Yeah. It's kind of a weird balance for me. On one side, I hate the process of planning the composition and making sure proportions are right first, because I want to jump into rendering the eyes, or tightening the sketch. But then I also get impatient with some details (like fingers/toes, or patterns in fabric, etc). I'm working on creating my Dev ID (finally), and the dress has a lot of complex embroidery on it. I'm trying to keep the mindset that if I get impatient with the details in my hurry to finish the piece, then the final result will be "sufficient" instead of "Wow!". And taking the time to make details accurate really makes a difference.

oh, same here although i do start with composition and such, i tend to jump to the small details because i adore adding them and seeing the changes they can make. sometimes i draw super-realistic eyes (or try to at least ) and then suddenly notice they are very asymmetrical or that the size is too large/small...
and yes, again completely agree some details annoy me (toes, fingers mainly ) and i try to ignore them and hope no one notices

I think doing scales is difficult, because either it looks like too much, or not enough, or just looks stupid lol. I love seeing realistic drawings like this. so beautiful. and i think using pencil is the best way to shade

Yeah...I tend to prefer scales on, but it's a lot more work, takes longer to finish one piece, and makes more opportunities for error.... besides, maybe some dragons really are smooth??

And thank you for the lovely comment!

lol, well, we all know my dragon's smooth lol. i have been wanting to put scales on her, but like you said, it leaves a lot of room for errors and that's what it ends up looking like, one big error lol.

and you're ever so welcome

very nice realism. The head is my favorite part, because it seems to be the most alive. The feet need a bit of work, but they're really nice.

Thank you! I agree about the head. I think that's my favorite part, too...I dunno, I thought the feet were okay, but I'm far from perfect, so I'll see if I can't learn from this drawing. Thanks for commenting!

Thanks! Yes, the scales did take the longest, but no more than 4 hours....I like the wings, too! Texture kinda turned out funny, but *shrug* meh, it's okay...

Thanks! I think if I added a little more contrast, or something it might be a little more eye-catching. Otherwise it's overall pretty light...

This is really neat. The detail is amazing and the wings are proportional, as well as realistic in terms of being able to carry the dragon. The eyes and the scales are very detailed and look like you spent time on them. Real time, not just mock attention. Good work.

Thanks! Personally I think the wings would have to be a little wider in terms of flying, but it looked better this way in a design sense. I'm glad you like it, though!
