But this time, Killua isn't sure if there's any good left to find.

Because -- and who would know this better than Killua -- the people you grow up with leave a lasting impact on you, whether you like it or not. So, is it any wonder that Ciel turned out a stone-cold killer?

I feel like I'm going to end up posting all of Penumbra like this, in fits and bursts. It's Ciel's story told in two parts, in past tense from the POV of 12YrOld!Ciel and in present tense from 17YrOld!Killua, who's slowly realizing his ex-friend isn't anything like he remembers anymore.

If you guys don't know by now that I have a serious hard-on for light-dark contrasts, this is my confession. I thought I'd be struggling over this, but I actually had a lot of fun with it, especially since the shadows were pretty straightforward and I didn't have to struggle with them (like I usually do). I think I'm going use this style a lot more in future works.

I don't know how clear it is, because it's a pretty small weapon to start with, but Ciel has a Ben's Knife. She tends to use it a lot more than her nen; it's easier to reach for in sticky situations, and she likes the familiarity of it.
