Description Completed project is here! ^_^ [link]

Upon request, here it is! I threw these pictures together the other day, but haven't had the chance to put this little tutorial outline together until now.

That being said, please keep in mind that this is an outline of a tutorial, so it's really more of a basic run-through of how I made the little guy. I will not be doing a step-by-step tutorial-- I'm really sorry about this, but there are too many variables with this project to do one. (i.e. shape of the dogbowls, size of the flashlight, what sort of tools and materials each person has available... and so on.)

I'm also sorry if these WIP pictures are totally useless. I really wasn't expecting people to ask about how it was made, so I didn't really take that many/take high-quality ones... ^_^'

So, to start, a two metal dogbowls, and a styrofoam sphere are needed. The later is available at most craft stores, and you should be able to pick out an accurate size. Cut the bottoms out of the two dogbowls (now, depending on the shape of your bowls, you may have to do more, but this is all mine required) and use them to mark out where the sphere needs to be carved out.Once that is done and you're happy with it, cut the sphere in half, find a piece of styrofoam of a certain thickness (should be about the same as the gouge running down the center on the completed Wheats), glue it in between the halves of the sphere, and sand it down. You an then put a hole in for the flashlight, and be sure to have the ends wider for the eye lens and back. (See pictures.) Once the sphere is all carved ot, you'll have to seal it to get all the bumps out, harden it, and allow it to be spraypainted. (I recommend using car body filler putty, oddly enough.)

For the disc around his eye, I used aluminum, rolled and hammered into a slightly coned shape. Rivets work for the three black dots, and the 'triangle' in the upper corner can be ground in. The lens for his eye is the paneling that goes over florescent lights, shaped over an outdoor floodlight using a heatgun, and a couple of sheets of translucent blue paper turn the light the proper color. The straps across his sides and the cross in the back are aluminum (it can be easily bent into shape.) For structural support, there are two long rods through his center that touch a ring around the flashlight. Over with his handles, the rods that go trough his main body are spraypainted wood, as are the black 'connectors.' The handles are bent aluminum aircraft tubing with rubber hose in the center.

After spraypainting everything and final assembly, his scuffs and grease marks and whatnot can be easily painted on with acrylic paint. ^_^ I also painted on the Aperture logo.

Phew. Sorry if this is... completely unhelpful. As I said, I wasn't expecting people to ask, and I'm awful at explaining this sort of thing... And my techniques and whatnot may not be the best. So, in short, I am very sorry, and I can only hope that this was of some help anyway!

This is really impressive! I've been thinking about making a Wheatley that can move (ie, puppeteered) for a cosplay. Do you have any advice?

Oh wow, that would be quite awesome! May i ask how and what exactly do you plan to have moveable?

Well, I've seen some model layouts on the web (and the character models themselves ) that have movable parts (like tracks and rotating bits). I plan to go off of those, heheh.

Oh, like the ones used by that guy who made the miniatures? A full-size one would be awesome!

I don't know how much I can help with that... but I'll try. ^_^ For starters, I'd recommend to be careful with weight, as you'll be carrying him around-- so stick to light metals, plastics, light woods, foam, and so on. Another biggie would be to make sure the surfaces are smooth and have enough friction to stay put when you don't want things to move, but not so much that you can't slide the parts around easily. That also means you'll have to keep a close eye on how big the gaps are between each part.

I'd also imagine that you'll have to use something other than a flashlight for the light-- possibly straight-up LEDs?

Sorry if that's not much help... Although, if you do go through with this and hit a rut with something specific, feel free to ask me anything, and I'll see what I can do. ^_^

I have been staying up all night just staring at my DA page and refreshing it, waiting and waiting for this.

Okay, so I haven't, but still.

Ahahaha, I sure hope you haven't! XD I'm sorry it took so long, I've been pretty busy lately and haven't found the time to put it all together! I hope it's of at least some assistance! ^_^

This will be of some assistance, yes.
Although...where did you get the aluminum? And could you estimate how much the whole thing costed so I can start saving up for mine?

Oh gosh, to be honest, I have no idea. D: You see, my father works on restoring airplanes-- so he let me use a bunch of old scraps he had lying around... I'm so sorry, I wish I could be of more help there. ): But I'll ask him as soon as possible, and hopefully he can give an estimate.

haha. It's cool, I'm resourceful. I'll find something to use in place of the aluminum if I can't find any.

OOOHHH

That sounds really, really complicated. Especially metal-cutting. I have an even larger appreciation for how awesome this is, and by extension, you are, thanks to these pictures. WOW.

Aw, thank you! ^_^ I'm not going to lie-- it was pretty complicated at points. ^_^' But of course, I probably made it sound even more so, thanks to my failure at explaining it. XD

Shoyrcloud In reply to ZutarianToph [2011-07-03 23:09:22 +0000 UTC]

It definitely appears that way.

XDD I don't blame you; I can't explain things either. Nothing's worse than when somebody asks you how to draw or make something. O_o Somebody asked for a Sculpey tutorial once; I might attempt one sometime but I dunno...

I know right? It...frightened me a little, when people started asking, because I knew that I would fail at explaining it and not be of any help. XD

XDD I saw all the comments it got; that is SO AWESOME

I couldn't believe people were asking to buy it though. YOU MADE IT FOR YOU >8

Although that's also somewhat of an honor, that people wanted to buy it...

IT'S THE THIRD THING ON ALL TIME MOST POPULAR FOR "WHEATLEY" AASADDJLSKJFKJSJKJ O_O Sorry. I just still can't believe it!

Ahahaha, yeah, that's pretty much how I felt...! I'd never sell him, ever, and it was a little awkward to be asked... but I'll take it as a compliment. ^_^

OH MY GOSH REALLY *looks it up*

THAT IS AWESOME 8DDDDDD

I made it to... number 32, maybe? I'm somewhere in the first three pages for "pokemon invader zim" and "homestar runner"... Oh gosh, wait, I'm 3rd in "Pokemon invader zim" with a deviation that isn't even related to Pokemon, and then I'm waaaayyyy far back in "homestar runner". Huh. O_o

Yeah, that's got to be the best reaction. XDD

It's so weird... I honestly never thought I'd have anything show up on the first page for a keyword. It's exciting!

Yeah, we're number 3 buddies! *high fives*

YAAAYYYYYY

There's only two deviations in me, and I just made the third; don't know where I got the inspirations or how I... drew... the... uhh, okay, that didn't quite work. XD It made no sense anyway. Darn old me, trying to stuff random quotes and references into everything...
