Well that's some fine looki plain from the 1950's, and I bet it was a challenge to draw the wing propellers in such a visually accurate fashion.

Very... Khm, powerful artwork. Reminder of old times, better to say. I think that the best thing here is the plane. Tu-95... It's my favorite one, going after An-225, "Buran" spacecraft and "Spiral'" secret fighter-bomber designed by Gleb Losino-Losinsky.

I think one of the concerns was what the shock wave would do to the plane and crew at a 100mT. There were a lot of unkowns with this powerful bomb.

Yeah. This is why they built only 1 of this thing. (Maybe there's a second?)

They didn't. It was original payload for test detonation with lead shell. It wasn't lowered, it was the one intended for the test. If it had entered production and was put in service, then and only then it would have received plutonium shell and thus 100 MT.

You're insisting on terminology, but don't actually get it. It's different models. A prototype car with 100hp engine instead of 300hp one is different car with different engine, not the same model with installed 300hp engine artificially lowered by changing chip setup. Even if they had put the plutonium shell on test bomb, it wouldn't have been 100MT. It was different design entirely, but it was helping to test the 100MT one.

What is remarkable these engines were developed from German WW II designs. The German engineers and tooling were captured and sent to the Soviet Union. Mr. Kuztsov introduced the 1st NK-12 in 1952.
The NK-12M developed 8,948 kW (12,000 shp), uprated in the neNK-12MV to 11,033 kW (14,795 ehp) and reaching 11,185 kW (15,000 ehp) in the NK-12MA. The NK-12 remains the most powerful turboprop engine ever built and hold many world records. Its an aircraft to be admired with great history.
Cheers, Mike

I have the book "Tupolev TU-95/-142 Bear" by AeroFax and it has fascinating history, pictures and diagrams...I've always been fascinated by this aircraft and the B-36! Something about giant bombers is so cool! Thanks for the info! In WWII the Germans had these dinky He-111s and the better tactical JU-88... but the huge 4-6 engined craft are so interesting....especially in a "what if..?" scenario!

If I'm not mistaken, the Bear that dropped the bomb was actually singed from the heat of the blast... despite being many miles away from the blast. Just imagine if the Soviets had decided to use MAXIMUM YIELD instead of only HALF yield...

zulumike In reply to Tank50us [2012-07-23 18:21:05 +0000 UTC]
They actually had the capability of a 100 KT bomb, but realized the fallout would have been too much, imagine that.
The blast also effected their altitute. I read that they dropped almost a mile down, I'm sure that was scary. This was ther major concerrn, the shockwave effect.
Cheers, Mike
