Description This is a mixed media project and my first nautical artwork ever. I have been inspired by several artist here of their naval artwork. Needed a break from doing aircraft art.
I used several new “wave” and “sky” brushes from GIMP for painting the ocean and sky.

The USS Idaho (BB-42) powers through heavy seas of the Pacific toward the Iwo Jima combat zone where her large 14” guns will be used to support the invasion of the island. She was awarded a total of (7) Battle Stars during WW II.

With World War II raging in Europe, Idaho was transferred to the Atlantic Fleet in June 1941. Based in Iceland during much of the rest of that year, she helped cover convoys against the threat of German raiders during a period of "undeclared war". Following the devastating 7 December 1941 Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, she was sent back to the Pacific, arriving in January 1942. For the next year, Idaho operated along the U.S. west coast and in the Hawaiian area. In April 1943, she went north to the Aleutians, where she supported the landings at Attu in May and Kiska in August.

Idaho next joined the drive across the Central Pacific, taking part in the Makin landing in November 1943, the Kwajalain invasion in February 1944, a bombardment of New Ireland in March, the Marianas operation in June and July, and the assault on the Palaus in September. Following an overhaul, she returned to the combat zone in time to provide heavy gunfire support for the February, 1945 invasion of Iwo Jima. Idaho's 14" guns were again active bombarding Okinawa from late March into May 1945. While off Okinawa, she was damaged by a "Kamikaze" on 12 April, but returned to action after brief repairs.
The end of the Pacific War in August 1945 found Idaho preparing for the invasion of Japan. She was present in Tokyo Bay when Japan Surrendered September 2, 1945.

355.6mm = 14 inches

.50 caliber BMG = 12.7 mm

these numbers refer to er to outside diameter of shell or bullet.

.50 Caliber doesn't always mean the .50 caliber BMG here's a wiki link on the cannons of the Idaho en.wikipedia.org/wiki/14%22/50…

QUITE a DRAMATIC image!!!!!
It captures the Drama of War at Sea in a way that photography can't.

Might want to read up on the Iwo class friend. They had 16" guns and served actively until the late 90's

One of the big, bad wolves of the Pacific! Surely superior in fire control and radar to her dreadnaught contemporaries in the Pacific. Would've been more than a match to anything she met. Liked/Watched!

Really great work mate.
Now only the Montana class had launched there would have been quite some competition to the Yamato.

The Iowa-class were enough competition for the Yamato; 5.5 knots faster, superior accuracy (due to better fire-control systems), could travel up to twice as far, and their guns had similar penetration. In contrast, the Yamato never sank a single ship in almost 4 years of service.

The New Mexicos were holy terrors, a blizzard of shells.  I admit to a fondness for the mighty Marylands, which hit harder, but not as often.

I don't know are you a most talented artist or a person who just takes photos and colors them saying he recreated them. I'm not sure if I want an answer, it's just, if you are the first one ignore this comment and if you are the latter one think again what are you doing. dA is already all too filled with copycats and talentless attentionwhores who have no intention of improving themselves. In either case; ease off with the smudge tool, you use it way too much.

I have given credit for all my work. Yes, I work from black and white photos and also from game models.

After looking at your work, you have no credibility in critiqueing anyone. I will keep doing what I like its called "digtal art". Yes, I am a most talented artist.

Thank you for your concerns.

Ah, you've created something that I can genuinely love. I've got a real admiration for the "Castles of Steel", and this is a very good piece of artwork. I cannot say how much I love this piece.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

zulumike In reply to The-Necromancer [2012-08-10 14:03:29 +0000 UTC]

Thank you for the kind words.

They were castles of the "castles of Steel", Unfortunately they became extinct after WWII.

The world navies thought the biggest battleships would win the wars, but they all becames targets of bombs and torpedoes.

As someone stated during the Pacific War " they will run out of ships before we run out of torpedoes....."

Building thees great ships are another story but the "nuts and bolts" is what I really like also. I want to do some shipbuilding artwork in the future, dedicated to the men and women who built these behemoths.

Cheers, Mike

The large battleships of WW II all had similar hull designs, they need that wide beam for stabilization, espcially when firing broadside salvos. Sending a 2,000 lb. shell 25 miles plus might have a heck recoil.

Very cool, awesome work.

My only complaint is that the guns feel off center.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

zulumike In reply to Ravajava [2012-08-09 17:12:40 +0000 UTC]

It's based on the reference photo. It's because the forward turret has been rotated 90 degrees starboard.

I wanted to show off the big guns and research for acuracy is based on the actual photo.

Thanks for the feedback.
