This reminds me of a tennis ball/lotus flower hybrid. I'm not sure I particularly enjoy that tennis ball association but in general it's a very nice design and technically it looks top-notch.

I was trying to create a realistic ball using just the layer styles.
Of course i couldn't settle for a regular ball so i added some wings to it.. and some stripes. It may be a bit too much but it was all in the name of practice (does that make any sense to you? My English is not perfect, sorry).
Also, i am glad you like the overall design.

Yeah I understand it's just for practice. Even if it isn't, I suppose it could make sense. It's just that I don't find tennis balls visually attractive. A lotus flower however is a lot better.

This is a great idea!
Next time i will try to do a lotus flower, as you've said it's more visually attractive than a tennis ball and more challenging to design. I'd probably learn more by trying to design a lotus flower than trying to design a ball anyway.

I don't know; you've probably covered all the basic techniques regardless of what you design. Are you using Photoshop or Illustrator? It's probably more challenging to get it right in Illustrator but I strongly recommend using that for illustrations like these so you can resize the work without loosing quality.

Yeah AI and PS are quite alike in their interface. Illustrator can get quite tricky when working with gradients though. For complex gradients you will have to use mesh maps, which I never really got the hang of. Illustrator is probably the only program you should use for logos.
A tablet can be very useful in Illustrator if you want to make vector illustrations, but do only use the tablet for that though. When it comes to logos you're better off with the mouse, otherwise you will get a lot of unnecessary vector points, or vector points in the wrong places which disturbs the hinting when converting to pixels. I don't do illustrations digitally so for me my tablet is most useful when I do photo-touching in Photoshop.

I agree, when talking about logos PS < AI but i have a lot to learn about AI before i can complete a project with it (the gradients you are talking about for example, i am not even going to begin to talk about the mesh maps and other tools AI provides).
It didn't even cross my mind to use the tablet for logos, mainly because of the reasons you stated. I'm going to use it to digitize some drawings that my brother in law made (fun! fun! fun!).
