Description Some Finnish guy standing by a burial mound.

Detail: www.deviantart.com/deviation/3…

My friend suggested I should start posting in Scraps separate details of the finished pictures I submit. I did it now, but would it be a good idea to do it in the future also? The detail shots of course have scratches and look sketchier, but you can see some of the smaller elements better in them, like the helmet in this case.

Looks very epic!

And I believe I listen to too much viking metal as well. Which one is one your favourite?

this pic totally rocks, although real vikings never wore such horned helmets! Nevermind - epic art!

This is wonderful, I love your use of line and colour and shading. It's beautiful, like an illustration from a storybook.

Hadn't drawn forestscapes for ages before this. Probably should paint them a bit more often, before I altogether forget what trees look like. XD

You did a very good job on them though ^^ It won't take you much to get landscapes looking absolutely stunning

It's such a beautiful painting, and I love the colours! Guy looks more Vikingy, though. Did we ever wear horned helmets?

Thanks!
It's a bit romanticized. The pompous pose and billowing cloak should give that out. Plus, real Viking warriors did not use horned helmets, except for maybe ritual purposes. One of those common misconceptions brought by comics and national romanticism.

Wonderful, rich depth of color. I like the way a few details/lines seem to glow out from the rest. I think I really, really like the colors of the clouds in the background, though.

Also: there's such a thing as too much Viking metal?

Tried a few new techniques on this, one of them being the arranging of some perspective into the sky. Quite like how the clouds turned out myself.

Also: there's such a thing as too much Viking metal?

Probably not, but I fear the neighbors are starting to get tired of hearing what mostly sounds like a drunken Lord Khran trying to sing in his horrible mother tongue. xD

He looks a bit like dwarf, don`t you think? But I like him - he looks as a very strong man.. And his outfit... Remind me about Viking

The Finns were practically Vikings. XD People shared the same motives in clothing and decoration throughout the Finland-Scandinavia. I reffed quite a few of the clothing elements from my books about pre-1000 A.D. archeological findings in Northern Europe.
People were also shorter then.

Yeah, I know they were a VikingsBut you draw it so literally and so all .. I mean - this helmet, sword and that things. It`s really good.

Hymmm... Interesign. I think that I must do some research about Finnland-Scandinavia Sometimes it would be helpful.

Thanks. There's a bit of 'romanticism' in this view (real Vikings hardly used horned helmets), but at least till some degree I wanted to make the patterns and items look authentic. I haven't drawn that much people from a semi-historical point of view, usually just fanart and general fantasy.

Hmm. I don't know huge amounts of sources to the ancient culture of the Northern Europe, but WikiPedia is a good place to start (articles mostly in English, but I suppose they have Polish translations there also). Here are a few articles from my bookmarks:

Sacred-texts.com [link] has also whole books of Norse/Finnish mythology (Edda, Kalevala, ...). They're a bit difficult to read, however, since they're translated in rather old English.

Oh, you shouldn`t have But thank you Yes, I think that they should have something in Polish also.. If they have things about Maya Couture so why they shouldn`t have something about Nothern Europe...

About Helmets - it really looks authentic on your picture. Hymmm... Mayby you shold try.I mean - to draw some historical people. Don`t get me wrong - Your fantasy pictures are really good and I really adore them. But... you can also start some new like people from history... Not only these from Nothern Europe but also from other, that same fascinating culture... for exaple Atient Roma... or Greek. It would be very interessing expirience, I think. Of course, it is just my suggestion and you don`t have to do that

If there's anything to fix, I can't pin it down either. I painted this for about one and half weeks, and got eventually bored of the editing.

Well all that time shows. It is a very well done piece and i like the blurred effect it sorta gives off.

zorm In reply to D3monChicken [2006-09-05 17:34:27 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I used a bit less outlines in this and tried to get the main focus into the middle ground. Hence the blurry sort of effect there.
