Description Isn't he/she beautiful? Can anyone give me an accurate assumption on the species of snake this is? Found it outside under a tarp. I want to say garter, but to be sure. I'm pretty sure it's not poisonous.. But staying on the safe side. ^^

Eastern Garter Snake, but almost want to say Red-Sided with how red it is. Completely harmless. A wild caught one will eat fish, best bet is to get Smelt from market place. Feeding them the goldfish from a petstore isn't the best idea. I'm envious you found such a red beauty. If I had the money I'd drive up to get her from you.

I don't know if it's male or female. And thank you. <3 Just regular feeder fish then?

A few questions to ask, did you find it in an area where there is a water source for fish? If not, was the area damp for frogs? They will eat frogs, fish, and sometimes rodents. I just found me a very scarred one in a place I think where it would mostly survive on rodents/field mice. So I'm hoping he's eat a frozen thawed fuzzy mouse for me on Monday. Don't know yet.
You can try a cheap feeder to see, or if you're not squeamish find a toad to give her. (I know I wouldn't want to, toads are too cute.)

No water source close, and she/he was under a tarp where the garden is. I'm guessing toads or rodents.

The wild caught I have easily has taken rodents. So a frozen-thawed meal shouldn't be a problem. Also, worms, simple to find in the garden

Definitely a garter snake about to shed its skin, though what exact subspecies I dunno (theres so many of em!) theres a couple ways to tell if a snake is venomous or not. First, there are only 4 species of venomous snake in North America, Rattlesnakes, Cottonmouths, Copperheads, and Coral snakes, all pretty distinct from other snakes except for the Coral snake. Most obvious to see on most all venomous snakes is the triangular head, though some nonvenomous snakes will imitate that when threatened. Also the eyes, most venomous snakes have slitted pupils while nonvenomous have very round pupils.
The easiest way is to gently open the mouth (a credit card type object works great) and see if it has fangs, but this can be dangerous if your not very experienced with snakes.

Hope that helped! Garter snakes are beautiful creatures
