It's a epic poem in which Dante (self insert much?) describes his travels through Hell, Purgatory, and Heaven, at the same time elaborating about on medieval Christian theology and philosophy.
Pretty interesting stuff actually, especially the idea of theInferno (Hell) being parted in different circles with different punishments, depending on the sin. (You know, Envy, Lust, Avararice et cetera...)

I know! Or rather, it depends on what you're reffering to. If it's for the actual writer's work I'll say that the stuff is really very interesting for it's incredible creativity and fantasy ( but also infinetly complicated to read, as 14th century works have a tendency to), not counting how much bullshit the ideas caused at times.
If you mean Dante the character then yes, he's kind of a wimp.
